I really like the show. As a non-black person, the show helps me feel a little of that black's generational trauma and anger and for the first time in a long time I cried while watching TV (Michael Kenneth Williams man)
Watching your video sheds light on the aspects that I missed, most of all colorism. I think your criticism are fair and well-reasoned. It adds to my existing criticism (about the use of indigenous and Asian characters) which culminates in the "mistreatment" of secondary characters in service to Tic and to the narrative. Which was a huge shame

Ji-Ah's episode was one of my favorites but yea...it was pretty irrelevant to the show unfortunately. That actually may have been why I liked it so much: by the time that episode premiered the main story was such a mess I was glad for a reprieve lol.

Also I LOVED Ji-Ah’s storyline but agree, within the terms of the show, it served little to no purpose. I would’ve much preferred Ji-Ah’s story as it’s own separate thing, like a movie, and never bought into her romance with Tic being real. I feel like too many negative things were associated to Tic for Ji-Ah to make her forgive and love him. The first time she sees him he plays a role in the death of her friends and classmates. I can buy a friendship, but not a full on romance. Part of that is because I was shipping Ji-Ah with her classmate who turned out to be a spy.

Great video! In the aftermath I had a lot of these kinds of feelings about the show. Like its a step in the right direction as far as the type of genre I'd like to see a black centered cast star in and produce but there were a lot of missteps and mistakes. Now that I know how the book ends I agree that would have slapped so much harder than the humdrum ending we got.

While I do hate Christina I love how she’s the “bad big” of the show and can serve as a true allegory for White Feminism. She was all “oh woe is me I’m oppressed because of my gender” but had no problem with racism and using it for her own means.

I have listened to the podcast and while I def think it does add depth I think some of it still doesn’t click but I’ll add the link to the description!:)

I think you should listen to the companion podcast co-hosted by one of the writers because it adds a lot of depth and explanations to some of the issues you brought up here.

Hmm, maybe I'll just watch episodes 1 & 2 then. I've wanted to watch the show because of Michael K. Williams, but I know that multitude of hanging narrative threads is gonna frustrate me.
Another awesome video. Btw, maybe you make the drink part of a drinking game?

The show was so flawed! Interesting to hear about the changes from the book, since I never read it (and it aligns so much more with what I expected from the ending). But, I really enjoyed following it and reading commentary about it.
