[Early Access] Wonder Woman 1984 Review

Comments

17:10 (all throughout the beginning tbh. I'm only halfway through) I think you're giving Wondy's arc A LOT of grace. Like the word 'love' is doing a lot of work, Queen. This is full tilt little mermaid (and Captain America). I'm gonna lean on Cap's story because his is disturbingly similar to Die's. She hardly knows Steve. I don't think this level of devotion and contemplation is earned. At least not for the whole plot of a movie. They gave us a Bucky storyline with a Peggy relationship. Full shade, because they literally have the MCU for reference. The MCU had enough sense to wait a few movies for us to get to know Steve sans Buck/Peggy before serving us the chasing his past arc. Like wtf?? I'm not saying they should've been childhood sweethearts or anything but this seems really forced to me, thematically unimpressive, and regressive. This ain't it. TLDR; Why is the dceu giving Diana (whose Marvel counter part is usually Thor) a really shitty Captain America arc?? And love? We sure? Does she know anything about this man other than his first name, last name and job description/persona? Love the video so far!! Can't wait to hear what you have to say about the lack of queerness and people of color. Thank you for everything you do!!

I 'm glad you brought up the issue with her mother being away not affecting her... Mom > Hot guy any day.

When you talking about your family it was more emotional than anything in the Wonder Woman film. Great film Review!

This was a great review; I think all your points were spot-on. In addition to Kara, I there's also a comparison to be made to Peggy Carter in Agent Carter. Like Diana, Peggy also lost a man she loved (but only knew briefly) during war, and that loss had a huge impact on her. (Also, both the men were named Steve and they "died" flying a plane…) Unlike Diana in this movie, though, Peggy had other motivations and formed other important relationships. It's so strange that the 60+ years since the last movie appear to have had no effect on Diana. If anything, it seems like Steve's death destroyed the fundamental belief in humanity that she had in the first movie. One would think, after decades of processing her grief and witnessing the horrors of the 20th century, Diana's first thought about what she would wish for would be more altruistic.

It baffles me that Hollywood still can't figure out how to write truly feminist movies. In my personal opinion, if the movie is drawing attention to the fact that there is a female lead, that makes it "feminism" made to profit off of women wanting representation. Even though I still enjoy some of them, I can feel how cringey it is in moments. And yet nobody acknowledges GOOD representation. I would argue my favorite feminist piece is Black Panther. Ryan Coogler never drew attention to the fact that T'Challa was surrounded by powerful women; he let them fulfill their roles. They were flawed and had ambitions and were so beautiful in the ideas they encompassed. I especially loved that they were allowed to disagree with each other on the right thing to do in a very serious moment in the plot. I can think of very few movies, especially blockbusters, that have allowed women to exist in the world without having to serve to satisfy a quota or aim to earn the movie brownie points for representation.

This was was surely something else. I really do want the movie just set with baby Diana thats devoid of the shitty racial politics and convoluted plotlines to bring in dead love interests

I’m really glad you enjoyed it and it touched you 💗 in the end, that is what matters.

We definitely watched the same movie ... pacing was terrible, story was cheap and cliche. they needed to both cut an hour and add 30 minutes to fill the gaps in the story. some amazing ideas drowned in simply bad moviemaking.

I really enjoyed this movie! I didn't feel the drag and I thought things were set up well. I was engaged and surprised how quickly this moved. I thought the monkey's paw reference was more of an example than literal. And I really thought his son was meant to inherit Max's greatness but Alastair wasn't activated because he wouldn't order anyone around as a young meek child. Overall I really enjoyed the movie's message and felt it's emotional weight. It seemed like a nice continuation of her character in the first movie. She appeals to people's better nature and minimizes her negative impact at every turn. And I felt like her relationship with Barbara made her better rounded. I liked this movie even better than the first one and I'm really looking forward to see how the trilogy ends!

I totally connected Kara and WW. I much prefer Kara and all her flaws to WW

Wife and I watched it last night, and enjoyed it, but also was saying literally everything you are saying about Diana not being Wonder Woman. And in terms of just, writing and structure... Dramatic scenes were bloated and the pacing/editing was ridiculously overlong. Diana wasn't a person except in relation to "her man". The special effects/action scenes looked... silly. The rules around Diana's powers made no sense - why could she suddenly do invisibility magic, and why did she never do it again or before that? Why didn't we SEE the coffee cup scene she mentioned? WHY COULD SHE FLY? Lassoing lightning bolts made MORE sense than her sudden ability to just... fly. The voice over implied she learned to fly from her pilot friend, but then she just floats through the air without being aerodynamic. Why did the Monkey's Paw aspect of the wish system... not involve any of the clever "gotcha" logic that a Monkey's Paw wish is supposed to have? It's not just "get a wish, something bad happens", it's supposed to be "get a wish, and something IRONICALLY BAD BUT TECHNICALLY PART OF YOUR WISH" happens. But they just... didn't bother writing any clever Monkey's Paw twists. Twice Max's son made wishes that didn't come true. Why didn't Max's son's wishes come true??? Why could Max give Barbara two wishes at the end, when literally 30 minutes earlier the movie showed us NOT BEING ABLE TO GRANT SOMEONE TWO WISHES? It just... wow, kindof a letdown all around. The scenes of Diana and Steve were great, tho. And Kristin Wiig stole the scenes she was in - when she wasn't CGI. And Pedro was AMAZING. "Frustrated, underwhelmed"... yup.
