Rainbows & Unicorns

The glow of the old CRT TV in front of them lights up the room. Flashes of gunfire streak across their faces. Their eyes are wide and fixated as they both frantically tap at their controllers.

“Tom!” Jay shouts, looking at his friend’s screen below his. “We’ve gotta take out the Wraith!”

“Gotcha!” Tom nods in agreement, leaning closer to the old square TV taken from the loft.

Just as the two boys are getting into it, the main bedroom light flicks on, blinding them both. Like vampires, Jay and Tom recoil at the bright light in pain.

Seconds later, as the sunspots fade from his vision, Jay glances toward his bedroom door. There stands Luna, his younger sister, dressed in her pyjamas and ready for bed. She lingers beneath the light switch, cheeks flushed, unable to meet his eyes.

“Luna!” Jay huffs. “Get out of my room!”

“Can I play?” Luna asks innocently, with a curious smile.

“No.”

“Why not?”

Jay pauses the game and stands up from the foot of his bed. Tom rubs his sore eyes before looking in Luna’s direction.

As the two boys glare, Luna starts to feel a little uncomfortable. They are twice her height and twice her age.

“This is not a girl’s sleepover, Luna,” Tom says tactfully from the edge of the bed.

“Yeah,” Jay reinforces, walking over to his sister to poke her forehead. “No girl’s allowed at a boys' sleepover.”

Luna bats his hand away and pouts, but Jay continues to tease.

“Do we look like little girls, Luna?” he asks rhetorically. “No, we don’t. So, unless the two of us morph into little pipsqueaks like you in the next hour, you are not welcome!”

An idea burns bright in Luna’s mind. She slowly grins at her brother as he points for her to leave his room. She stands in the doorway as Jay tries to close the door.

“So, if you were girls, you’d let me play?” Luna asks confidently.

“Yes,” Jay smirks, slamming the door in her face, only to then lock it. He then turns to Tom with a smug look on his face. “Yeah, right. We’d turn into girls when pigs fly!”

Tom chuckles before turning his attention to the TV, “W-Wanna—” his voice cracks and squeaks out all high-pitched.

“Whoa, dude!” Jay laughs, noting his voice break. “Is that you trying to become a little girl for my sister!? You’re voice went well high just then!”

Embarrassed, Tom clears his throat. “S-Sorry about that,” he says, talking normally. “Do you wanna keep playing? We’ve got this!”

“Y-yeah…..”

Instantly, Jay holds his mouth in surprised. Just as Tom did seconds ago, his voice cracks even higher.

“Haha!” Tom points. “Happened to you too!”

Jay shakes it off and sits on the bed next to his friend. He clears his throat and picks up his controller. “Weird,” he remarks in his normal voice.

Things remain normal for the next few minutes as the boys continue to hunt down the Covenant, but as Tom reaches for an extra spicy Dorito chip, he stops himself and looks at the chip in his hand.

Slowly, he puts the chip to his tongue, like he’s tasting it for the first time. Jay pauses the game and looks at him, a confused expression on his face.

“Dude?”

“Urgh!” Tom reacts after touching his tongue to the chip. “These are ikky!”

Jay furrows his brow. “Ikky?”

Tom nods and drops the chip back into the bowl like it has cooties.

“Ikky?” Jay repeats, looking at him like he’s gone crazy.

“Yes.” Tom then looks at the selection of snacks they’d gathered for the sleepover and pouts. “What are these flavours, Jay? Don’t you have any like strawberry candy or like pink lemonade or something?”

“Candy?” Jay asks, looking at the bowl of chips and energy drinks.

Lost in thought, as if a storm of snack decisions swirled in his mind, Jay pauses for a moment before looking at his friend with a bright, decisive smile.

“Yeah!” he nods playfully. “I’m sure if I ask my Mommy, she’ll have all sorts of snackies for us!”

Jay continues to smile, but Tom looks bemused. A smirk tugs at his lips.

“Ask ‘Mommy’?” He replies mockingly. “…Snackies?”

Not in appreciation of his friend's teasing, Jay pouts and folds his arms. “Do you want me to go get candy and pink lemonade or not?”

Tom’s demeanor quickly changes. “Please!” His voice cracks once again.

“Okay!” Jay says in an equally high pitch, “I’ll go ask Mommy.” He stands and heads towards the door. “Don’t play on without me. Okay?”

As quickly as Jay disappears downstairs, he reappears again holding a big bag of gummy candy, some cupcakes, and under one arm, a bottle of pink lemonade!”

“Snackies!” Jay squeaks out.

Not even acknowledging the voice crack, Tom brings his hands together in sheer delight. “Yay.”

The two clear away their old snacks and set out the cupcakes, candy, and lemonade on the table in front of them. As they are about to resume playing, Tom points at one of the cupcakes.

“Can I have the rainbow one?” he asks politely.

Jay nods several times before pointing at the one he wants. “Only if I can have the unicorn. I think that’s the prettiest one!”

“Nah,” Tom shakes his head enough for his soft fringe to fall and cover his eyes. “Rainbows are prettier!”

Pleased with their choice of cupcake, neither of them actually touches them. They simply pick up their controllers and start playing Halo once again. However, after just a few minutes playing, Tom throws down his controller in bratty rage.

“I hate this!” He grumbles, fighting furiously with the strands of hair in his eyes. “I can’t concentrate! My hair is getting in my eyes all the time, and these controllers at so big in my hands!”

Amused by Tom’s outburst, Jay giggles with a single hand over his mouth. “I’d never noticed how long and pretty your hair is. No wonder it’s getting in your eyes.”

Jay tilts his head gently to one side as he takes in Tom’s soft, but wavy locks falling down the side of his face.

“Do you—” Jay reaches across the brush some of Tom’s hair away from his face. “—Want me to see if my sister has a hair clip you can borrow?”

“Would she mind?”

“I don’t think so,” Jay replies, swiping at the hairs falling around his own eyes.

Tom smiles and agrees, but also tilts his head to one side in curiosity.

“When did you—” he begins to question as Jay stands. “—When did you have such long hair? It’s around your shoulders….”

Lifting on hand to his hair, Jay runs his fingers through the soft brunette strands of hair framing his face. “I dunno,” he replies before smiling. “Maybe I should ask my sister for two clips.”

The pair share a lighthearted giggle.

Jay leaves the room and reappears only a moment later, holding a bunch of stuff borrowed from his sister. Tom, hands deep in the candy, looks up and smiles.

“She said we could borrow all this….” Jay dumps stuff onto the bed before showing Tom a hair clip. “I got you a bright pink one. Is that okay?”

Brushing now much longer hair behind one ear, Tom gives Jay the dirtiest of looks. Like he’s done something he shouldn’t with his fries.

“Pink one?” Tom asks, looking at the item Jay has borrowed. “What is all this? Are you making fun of me by borrowing all this from your sister?”

Jay looks up, still holding the pink hair clip. “No,” he replies honestly. “I thought this was cute and would look pretty on you.”

Jay looks down at the floor, having heard what he’s just said. It leaves him feeling rather confused, but before he even has time to think about it, Tom snatches the pink hair clip from his hands.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Tom chuckles to himself as he slides the hair clip into his hair, neatly tucking away his bangs. “I do like pink. It’s my color.”

“Huh?” Jay looks up to see his friend looking into his bedroom mirror, gently wafting his long hair from side to side.

“Ellie, do you know what we should do?” Tom turns to look at Jay with a wide smile.

Ellie,” Jay quickly interrupts. “That’s not my name, Mia!”

Jay stops, brings a finger to his mouth in thought, and a fog descends over him. “Wait a second,” he begins to twirl strands of hair with one finger in thought. “What is my name? It’s Ellie, right?”

Tom, also confused, looks vacantly off into the distance.

Ellie….?” Tom looks at his friend, takes in her lush, soft brown hair and big blue eyes. “Why are you asking me what your name is. It’s your name, silly.”

“Sorry…” Ellie fights with the hairs in her eyes once again. “Mia, maybe playing Halo is messing with my mind. We should do something else.”

In a world of his own, Mia turns to the mirror and looks herself up and down.

“Ellie?” She says, looking at her baggy black shorts. “Do I seem shorter to you?”

Jay, now sitting on the bed, playing with the hair ties, nail varnishes, and cute scrunchies his sister has left her borrow, looks up.

“I don’t think so. You’ve always been a bit of a shorty.”

For a moment, silence between the pair as Mia continues to look at herself in thought.

“Hey!” Mia claps her hands together with excitement, breaking the silence. “How about I braid your hair!?”

Mia touches her hair as she stares at her own reflection. “Braid my hair?”

“Yes!”

“Is that… something boys do?” Mia asked, turning to Ellie with a puzzled look.

“Huh?” Eliie looks up, already holding the hair ties she needs. “W-what did you just say?”

“Um….” Mia sits on the edge of the bed and flicks out her hair from behind with both hands. “I said I wanted pigtails.”

“Aww,” Ellie scrambles across the bed on both her knees to sit behind Mia. “I can do that for you!”

As Ellie starts to gather swaves of Mia’s hair, she stops. She looks around at the bedroom—a boy's bedroom and suddenly feels out of place, like a lingering dream that feels real.

“Mia…?” she says, feeling a little overwhelmed. “Is this right? Am I right? I feel odd. Like this isn’t my room. Like, we aren’t supposed to be doing this? Do you know what I mean?”

Her feet now unable to reach the floor from the edge of the bed, Mia starts playfully kicking out her legs in thought. “I think I know what you mean,” she replies, remaining still as Ellie starts braiding her hair. “But I think it’s just these clothes I’m wearing. I don’t know why I’m wearing such baggy pyjamas.”

Mia picks at her oversized shorts, which just hang from her frame. “Maybe My Mommy packed the wrong ones.”

“They are ugly, aren’t they?” Ellie giggles, finishing one of Mia’s braids and fastening the hair tie to keep it in place.

As she takes the rest of Mia’s hair to braid the second pigtail, Ellie looks down at herself, and she’s also wearing ugly pyjamas that don’t fit.

“I’m wearing ugly stuff too,” she comments, skillfully braiding without a second's thought. “I don’t understand it, Mia. I deffo put these clothes on earlier, but now they just don’t feel right. Y’know?”

As Ellie finishes the second pigtail, Mia holds them with her hands in delight. She lets the pigtails hang from her head down past her chest. “Thanks, Ellie! I love them! They are sooo cute!”

Jumping up off the bed, Mia rushes to the mirror to look at herself. She stumbles as her shorts begin to fall down her legs. Managing to catch them before they fall down, Mia looks around at Ellie with the most bashful of smiles.

“That was close!” she giggles. “Nearly flashed my panties at you.”

Awkward silence.

“P-Panties….?” Mia scrunches her face. “We don’t wear—”

She stops mid-sentence and looks down at herself. She knew what she wanted to say, but now it’s gone. Confused, she peels back the lip of the shorts she’s wearing to see very male-looking boxer shorts.

For a brief second, that seems correct. Baggy pants for baggy bits. But after a moment's more thought, she wonders why she would be wearing baggy pants. That’s ugly. Not at all neat and tidy, like panties.

“Mia, did we dare each other to wear boys' clothes?”

“We are bo—” Mia stops herself, looks into the mirror in front of her, and gazes at the girl looking back at her in the reflection. “Did we? I don’t remember. Why would we do that? I’d rather look pretty than like an ikky boy.”

Hair down, completely covering her eyes, Ellie blows away the strands with her mouth. With a single puff, she gives Mia a bright smile. “Do you want me to ask my sister if we can borrow some of her pyjamas. She said we could borrow anything we want!”

“She did?” Mia’s face lights up, and with one hand holding up her shorts, she does a little dance. “You’re sister is so cool, Ellie! Maybe we should invite her over so we can play!”

“Yay!” Ellie bounces on the bed with her knees. “We could do each other's nails and makeup!”

“I’m so excited!”

“Me too!”

“Go ask her!”

“Okay!” Ellie climbs carefully off the bed, so as not to fall. When her feet touch the ground, she has to hold her clothes up with one hand. The t-shirt she’s wearing slides off one shoulder, and she giggles as she rushes to the bedroom door.

“I’ll be right back!” Ellie reaches up to the door handle on her tiptoes. “Don’t eat my cupcake while I’m gone or I’m telling my Mommy!”

An hour exactly after Luna paid the two boys a visit, the three girls are sitting on Ellie’s bed together. Surrounded by candy and hair accessories, the three girls giggle as they paint each other's nails.

Ellie, wearing black and white striped leggings and a unicorn design pyjama top, chooses a lovely pink color for her nails. Mia, having chosen the most colorful outfit, wears rainbow knee-high socks, bright yellow shorts, and a white top with pink sleeves.

“I love this color!” Mia cheers with glee, looking at her bright blue nail varnish. “Do I look like a princess?”

Luna and Ellie nod. “Yes!”

Mia shows off her pale pink toes. “I wish my feet were big like Mommies, then I could wear a pair of her high heels! Then I’d be a princess too.”

“Heels with the cute pyjamas you’re borrowing from me, Jay?” Luna asks, stifling a laugh as she uses her brother's dead name.

“Who’s Jay?” Ellie asks, looking at her sister with an honest curiosity.

“Oh, no one,” Luna grins, reaching across to tuck hair from her new sister’s eyes. “I had this dream once where I had a smelly, mean older brother and he’d never let me join in with anything!”

“W-Was I the older brother?” Ellie holds her nose. “Stinky. I don’t wanna be a boy!”

Mia taps Luna on the shoulder and leans towards her. “You’re always welcome to play with us, Luna.”

Luna’s eyes light up with an idea. “D-Do you—” she blushes. “—wanna play dollies with me before Mommy makes us go to bed?”

Ellie and Tom glance at each other as the Xbox behind them whirs, still running and now entirely ignored.

“Yes!” they both reply in unison, and then they cheer, “Girly Sleepover time!”
