Kai’s Sleepover Prologue
The front door clicks closed, and Kai slides off his shoes and hangs up his school bag.
“Mom?” he calls out
Seconds later, she appears in the doorway at the end of the corridor. Her hair is a little frazzled, and her apron is covered in paint.
“Kai?” She blows loose strands of hair from her face.
“Uh-huh”
Kai joins her in the back room of the house. In one corner is the chaos of his mother's painting, and in the other, a kitchen that is heavily used and little cleaned. His mother, happy in the mess, gives him a super wide grin as she sits at the table dividing the two spaces.
“How was school, sweetheart?” she then pouts and furrows her brow. “You’re late home again.” She leans in, careful with her hands and apron, not to get paint everywhere. “Is something going on that I should know?”
“N-no…” Kai shakes his head and looks past her at the painting she’s been working on. “Your painting is really coming together, huh, Mom?” he says, trying to change the subject.
His mother looks around. “I know!” she squeaks in excitement. “Thank you for noticing!”
"They share a smile before Kai turns toward the kitchen, rolls up his sleeves, and prepares to tackle the dishes from his mother’s lunch before starting dinner. As he pulls the dirty plates from the sink, he lets out a long, weary sigh."
“What would you like for dinner?” Kai asks his mom, concentrating on the construction of dirty dishes piled into some sort of sink pyramid.
"She doesn’t answer, prompting him to turn and face her. With a silly look on her face, his mother meets his gaze, then lifts a small glass of water and takes a slow sip."
“Kai,” she says softly. “Why do you take care of me like this?”
“Because you’re my mom,” he answers, giving her a wry smile. “You’d do the same for me if you weren’t so busy.” He points around at the cans of paint, loosely scrawled bed sheets to protect the floor, and her master piece in the making
"Kai’s mother glances at the mess she’s made and lets out an embarrassed giggle, before turning her eyes to her painting, studying it in thoughtful silence."
“So, what would you like?” Kai asks again, trying not to touch whatever has congealed on one of the plates. Likely a mixture of tomato ketchup and crumbs.
“I know what I’d really like,” his mother answers, still deep in thought.
Kai glances over and notices a tear in her eye. She quickly wipes it away, hoping he won’t notice.
“Mom?” Wiping his hands on a dish cloth, he rushes over to her. “W-What’s wrong!?”
“Nothing,” She laughs it off, brushing him off with one hand. “Ignore me, baby. Just an old woman getting all emotional over nothing.”
“Oh,” Kai forces a smile. “Okay.”
As he turns back toward the kitchen, her hand reaches out and gently touches his arm. He pauses, glancing back, only to see her wiping fresh tears from her eyes. The paint remaining on her fingers streaks across her cheek, leaving a smudge.
“M-mom!” Kai reacts, grabbing a towel for her to wipe her face. “You’re getting paint all over your face!”
“Oh, never mind me,” she fusses, rejecting the towel.
Kai takes a step back, confusion flickering across his face as he studies the pain etched into his mother’s expression.
“What’s the matter, Mom?”
"Kai," she says, meeting his eyes. "I just..." Her gaze drops as she bites her bottom lip. "I just don’t feel like I’m a good mom to you."
“Why?”
Misty-eyed, his mother only glances at him for a second before lowering her head again.
“I-I….I just don’t feel like I know you anymore, baby….”
Kai scoffs. “I haven’t changed, Mom.”
She looks up with a doubtful expression and shakes her head. “I’m not so sure, sweetheart.”
“Have I done something wrong?”
“No,” she says with a forced laugh. “I just…” She looks up at him, her eyes searching. “Why is it you keep coming home so late?”
Kai drops his gaze to the floor, his heart sinking. He thought he’d been hiding it well.
“N-No reason.”
His mother shifts as she sits at the table, and there’s a long silence.
“Do you have a girlfriend, Kai?” she asks softly. “If you do—why are you keeping it from me? I’d be really happy for you if you did, and I’d completely understand your recent lateness!”
“Mom….” Kai whines out, frustrated by the question she always asks. “No, I don’t have a girlfriend and I’m not being bullied, and No, I don’t think you’re the worst mother in the world.”
He looks down and smiles wide. “I love you, Mom.”
She smiles back, “I love you, too, baby.” She then lightly grasps his hand before he turns away to continue the housework in the kitchen.
However, with her head resting in her chin, she has more questions. She runs her finger across her glass in thought.
“Kai….,” she says with the utmost curiosity. “If you don’t have a girlfriend,” she waits for him to look back at her, and then she grins, knowing she has evidence. “Whose skirt is that upstairs in your room?”
“W-What!?” Kai’s voice shudders, and his entire body goes stiff. “W-What skirt!?”
“That skirt…” she says flippantly as she blows strands of hair from her eyes. “It’s like a pleated black on with white piping.” She chuckles to herself. “It’s deffo not mine! My fat ass wouldn’t fit into it!”
Kai’s mom leans forward in her seat with a silly expression. “Kai,” she says sweetly. “Were you lying to me?” She begins to tease. “You do… have a girlfriend. Don’t you!?”
“Y-You found that!?”
“Yeah, baby. So, what’s she like? Is she pretty?”
Cheeks burning bright, Kai stares at the dirty plates in the sink in front of him. “I…I….” his voice cracks. “I-I don’t have a girlfriend, Mom. Honestly.”
Her face scrunches into confusion. “S-So whose—”
“I’m looking after it for a friend!” Kai cuts her off. He starts washing the dishes at record speed. “Okay, Mom!?” he barks out. “I’m just looking after it for a friend.”
“Wow,” she raises both eyebrows at his reaction. “Well….,” she sips at her drink as the tension in the air becomes thick with frantic dishwashing. “I’m happy for you.”
“Happy?” Kai questions with a quick glance in her direction, before scrubbing even harder.
“Yes, baby,” she says softly, watching his every move. “I’m happy you’ve got a friend and they trust you with such things to look after.”
Kai’s shoulders sag and his face drops.
“Y-Yeah, Mom.” He answers, holding back the tears to hide them from her. “M-Me too.”
