Animation DVD?
Added 2024-01-17 01:22:19 +0000 UTCRight, so, the folks who occasionally do merch-related stuff with me ran the idea by me of making a DVD with my animations on it, apparently a proper thing with like a menu screen and such. My reaction to this ideas was "What? People don't use DVD's anymore, what are you talking about", but they insist it's a thing people go for.
Now, I'll be honest, I don't really want merch-hocking to become a big part of what I do. It's already happening a bit more than I like lately and I'd honestly rather just stick to making filth. But I ain't a dummy, and if I can allow for the creation of a thing people actually want and earn some extra money with basically only the effort it takes to say "sure" and maybe gather a few animation files, I feel like not doing it would be a dummy thing to do.
But, I don't want to just spam stuff with the vain hope that someone might buy some of it. If it's not a thing people actually want, then I'd rather not contribute to the manufacturing waste.
So, I said I'd ask. So I'm asking.
Say you're at a con and you stumble upon a collection of a whole bunch of already available Runimations all placed lovingly for you on one shiny plastic disk designed for use with an entirely out of date piece of technology. Is that a thing you'd want? Should I let them fire up the shiny-disk mill?
"No" answers are just as appreciated as "Yes" answers here, don't be shy!

Depends on the quality of the dvd and how much it would be. I like digital downloads but I won't say no to having a physical copy of stuff. Its good for if stuff gets lost or removed and such

2024-04-17 16:32:41 +0000 UTCI would like digital downloads more. Not only can you get a higher quality, but you can integrate it into systems you may already have such as plex.

2024-01-18 18:42:43 +0000 UTCYup! What they said- head to e621 and just search my name, everything I've done will come up. You can add the word "animated" if you just want animations.

2024-01-18 07:52:30 +0000 UTCI’d recommend just making flash drives of ur stuff and selling them if you wanna go for physical copies, might still be able to code a dvd experience too, and it’d be less fragile

2024-01-18 07:50:25 +0000 UTCI don't know if a DVD is up to the time but if you would make an archive with all your animations for download (I would even pay a coin extra for that) I would appreciate that I think.

2024-01-17 17:01:57 +0000 UTCA DVD might be a little much imo. Love your work but I probably wouldn't buy anything larger than a USB stick.

2024-01-17 12:17:31 +0000 UTCI personally would probably skip a DVD release, but if you had promotional jump drives or even SD cards… that would be different.

2024-01-17 11:22:30 +0000 UTCOn one hand, as a big fan of physical media, I love the idea; on the other hand, getting a copy definitely doesn't feel practical. I love the oddity factor of owning such a rare and unknown bit of media, but having to either go to a specific con, or having it shipped, would put up a bit of a barrier to entry, or might bloat the cost. An alternative could be putting up the resources to burn/print the DVD and case art online, so anyone could make their own (at least anyone with the hardware). A second alternative is maybe like a thumb/flash drive with a small custom case or maybe keychain attached (probably be more practical to ship as well).

Steve
2024-01-17 10:33:10 +0000 UTCIf it's stuff that's available to download at the same or better quality then no, DVDs aren't really attractive to me. I save the files to my PC so not having internet isn't an obstacle to watching them in my case. That said, if you want to burn a small run of DVD-Rs to sell, it's not like they're super expensive to make. Mostly just time-consuming to self-produce them.
Simon Tesla
2024-01-17 08:40:08 +0000 UTCNo? I mean I don't own a DVD player for some 13 years and don't plan to ever get one.
Jan B.
2024-01-17 08:27:22 +0000 UTCIf somedays everything is going down, you might still have a DVD Player. I think nothing is better than have a DVD to enjoy some beautiful moments.

2024-01-17 08:16:57 +0000 UTCI would buy one and set it in the case with my Rangarig DVD. Always good to have a hard copy of good stuff in case the internet goes bork.
Asp & EDEN
2024-01-17 08:03:51 +0000 UTCIt would be a curious object to have in possession, but I doubt it would be of any use as a method of enjoying the content, considering just how low quality DVD is. I’d be more content with printing out the cover myself and putting it on an empty disk case.

2024-01-17 07:51:22 +0000 UTCCould be indeed very interesting... I'd say yes if you also distribute the .iso alongside the physical copy

2024-01-17 07:16:25 +0000 UTCHonestly? If I still had a DVD drive in my computer I'd absolutely get it! ... unfortunately I don't, and I don't see myself getting one anytime soon. So I see the appeal but currently it's not something I could use.

2024-01-17 07:08:11 +0000 UTCI mean sometimes the internet dosnt work. I still have dvds around, I may not watch them often but they are there for when I feel the urge. I do also collect them from time to time if it's a movie or show I used to watch as a kid. Yes I do believe the market is still there, just not as prevalent as now with the whole streaming services thing. Let's just say your Animations are so good you could easily make a show with your characters with plots, fluff, and all the things in-between. Some folks love having physical items with access to the content over filling a hard drive too. So a yes from me. Not that it amounts to much.
Hawk_243
2024-01-17 06:12:42 +0000 UTCWhile I wouldn't go out of my way to set up a DVD player to watch it, I'd fuckin absolutely buy one! So, yes.

2024-01-17 05:27:27 +0000 UTCPersonally no, I don't own a DVD player and I feel like I'd be too nervous of someone in my household finding it if it was more NSFW in nature. Much harder to password lock a dvd than a computer 😅

2024-01-17 05:27:15 +0000 UTCMe personally, No, reason really just has to do with, i have nothing that can read dvd’s lol, a flash drive ok that’s something i might be interested in, but a dvd just seems a bit to outdated.

2024-01-17 05:23:40 +0000 UTCI’m gonna say yes just because I know I would consider it and it would be easy enough to take home and finally because I hate how non permanent digital media has taken over physical media. I want something with the stuff I like in my physical possession.
FrothyInferno
2024-01-17 05:06:14 +0000 UTCpersonally it’d be a huge yes from me, but i’m also a fiend for physical media. i love owning physical versions of things you wouldn’t expect to have a physical copy of (furry porn especially!) FWIW i bought the fox and the stable DVD at FWA but it was sold out at the last 2 cons i visited, so there’s definitely an audience for this kinda stuff

2024-01-17 04:38:52 +0000 UTCHow charmingly retro. Funnily enough, I helped create some art DVDs for a bunch of furry artists... about 15 years ago! I suspect most people these days can't even play a DVD.
Lion Panthera
2024-01-17 04:21:46 +0000 UTCI don’t personally think it’s something I’d be interested in. I prefer my content to already be digital and easy to watch. What I do miss is the zip files/packs you used to be able to drop. But I know there isn’t a ton you can do about that.

2024-01-17 04:06:42 +0000 UTCI wouldn't get it because it seems kinda troublesome in the modern day? If anything, I'd consider distributing a flash drive, but then I'm not sure about how legal stuff works with mailing around media with smut on it...

2024-01-17 03:42:30 +0000 UTCI wouldn't write off optical media so quickly. I think there's a growing frustration with the hostile way streaming services are treating their customers, and I get the growing feeling that people are going back to physical media. I'm trying to get into films a bit, and my options are either pay £10 a month for 720p that could vanish at any time, or £20 once for 4k that I own forever. Still, I don't see much money to be made for rereleasing publicly available animations that can just be downloaded. Unless you add exclusive content, which would be annoying to those of us that live outside the American continent.
Savvy Wolf
2024-01-17 03:09:14 +0000 UTCI personally wouldn't, but I might not be the market demographic that buys that kind of media ha. I wonder if you're going to find some bias in the comments here? Are the people who buy this media also the people who comment and contribute to the social circle here? I have no idea, but its something to keep in mind!

2024-01-17 03:05:09 +0000 UTCI would happily buy a DVD or bluray

2024-01-17 03:03:04 +0000 UTCEven if they’re not as popular, it would be worth it to make available to add to your residual income over time. You have some great art, so if people are willing to buy it, go for it. If they’re asking for a large initial outlay of funds, I’d be more suspicious. Otherwise, go for it. I’ve bought them before, though it was a data cd.

2024-01-17 03:00:09 +0000 UTCNo. At first I thought "why not a USB drive?" But then, why even keep it in a file on my PC when I can just stream it from the Internet? It'd probably be faster navigating to e621 than wherever I store it on my PC.

2024-01-17 02:44:34 +0000 UTCI'd be much, MUCH more likely to jump for a pretty book, or a prefilled USB drive. A DVD doesn't do much for me at all. I could only actually access it from a console and that's not where I like to do my jerkin'! Side note on cost: I would absolutely buy something collectible or merchy from you for $20-30 without much hesitation at all. But beyond that it's gotta be a special purchase that I've planned for, and I feel like that's a pretty conservative price. Most furs I think are a lot more spendy than I can be. :( Love to you from me and mine!!

2024-01-17 02:30:00 +0000 UTCI would definitely not get that. No offense Ru.

2024-01-17 02:22:42 +0000 UTCi think it would be ideal to have it be a dvd that works in a real dvd player with menus and all that, but *also* be able to throw it in a pc and just have the files there (i believe that's possible?). that way you get the novelty of owning a physical thing, plus the convenience of having a bunch of the stuff in one place and in the highest quality, plus the option of actually throwing it in a dvd player if you want. especially if you had some unique art to put on the case, it'd be a nice collector's item type thing.

2024-01-17 02:09:40 +0000 UTCChrist I don't think my rigs have had a CD drive in a decade or more lol But so long as you have 0 cost for production why not? It's worth a shot But if you were going to put your own money into something I think you'd do better with something a bit more tactile and a bit of silly fun. Like a adult 'magnetic monkey' type deal for one of your subs, have a little Kyle tied up on the headboard lol Or maybe something is for people in the know, like the bad dragon pins. Jus subtle enough so people that don't know you would not register it holds a dark and terrible nsfw secret lol
TheSpartanPenguin
2024-01-17 01:55:35 +0000 UTCMaybe if it was super high resolution or something? But having them on the computer is much more convenient I feel like. I "collect" CDs sometimes because you get a thing and you can use it if you want but it looks good on a shelf. Don't necessarily foresee watching porn from a DVD or necessarily displaying such an artefact mostly due to the missing dual-purposeness. Would kinda rather see a figurine or a daki or something like that. I'll throw money at you for just about whatever otherwise.

2024-01-17 01:47:01 +0000 UTCI don't sell them myself, the merch folks do, they do all the trouble of going to cons and selling stuff, and then we split profits. Could also potentially just be bought online though I'm not 100% on that. Still, that's why, even though I'm reluctant to do much merch stuff, it's kind of a dumb idea not to if it's stuff people actually want- if you ignore the time that went into making the animations since those are already done, it's basically just free extra support for me and people get a thing they like, hard to argue against that. :P

2024-01-17 01:44:42 +0000 UTCThat's an interesting idea as well- or perhaps just include it in the DVD somewhere. Buy the physical copy, get access to an easy way to download everything digitally as well.

2024-01-17 01:38:02 +0000 UTCHonestly, I have seen a few scenes where people wanna turn on a continuous hour long or so dvd of furry porn while people are having fun in their hotel rooms. It's not a bad idea, especially if it's cheap to make

2024-01-17 01:37:15 +0000 UTCYes. I think it’s not about using it but to actually own something you like. I know some people (including me) buy physical games but won’t open them. Instead we buy another digital version to play. It’s more or less the feeling that you “own” the physical thing, I think. But I guess I am just one of those crazy people :p

2024-01-17 01:32:35 +0000 UTCPhysical media is not a thing I use, personally. And having a hard copy of *ahem* "Corn" is definitely not my thing. I prefer digital files, sorted and stored in my Dropbox. Much more convenient, in general. I honestly don't even buy physical copies of video games anymore. If I have to find a disk or cartridge or something before being able to enjoy something, I likely won't bother. I've learned that about myself.
