Part 1
May reaches over and gently touches Freddy’s knee. “Hey, you ok?”
Freddy looks up from his staring contest with the floor and gently smiles. “Yeah, I’m ok.”
May tilts her head to the side and pouts. “You don’t look ok. Your face looks as white as the walls.”
“I’m good,” Freddy replies, dismissively waving his hand. “Just a little worried about the procedure is all.”
Leaning forward in her waiting room chair, May comforts Freddy with another tap on his knee.
“I don’t think there’s anything to worry about,” May says softly. “I hear this new technology is like flipping a switch.”
“Flipping a switch?” Freddy reacts, uncomfortably shifting in his seat. “One minute I’m a guy the next I’m a girl—you know I’m struggling to get my head around that.”
May nods and smiles. “Yeah, crazy right? I still can’t believe it’s an option.”
Freddy frowns and folds his arms. Looking back down at the floor he begins to worry again. He starts nervously fiddling with his fingers as they both wait in silence.
“I’m sorry,” May says, breaking the silence between them with an emotional tone of voice.
Freddy swiftly looks up to see tears forming in May’s eyes. Seeing his wife upset is like a dagger driven hard into his heart.
“I’m sorry my body is broken!” May continues, trying to hold back the tears. “I feel so useless!”
Freddy sits up to attention and he reaches over to comfort his wife as she had done for him moments ago.
“Don’t get sad May!” he replies. “You know I want to do this…I really do! I haven’t changed my mind… I’m just nervous is all.”
May bites her lips and finds it hard to look into her husband’s eyes.
“I don’t know what else to say,” she whimpers. “I’ve done my best to prepare you for womanhood and we’ve told everyone we know what we are doing.”
“You’ve been amazing!” Freddy interrupts, pressing the back of his hand against her rosy cheeks.
“I even brought you an entirely new closet of feminine clothes for when your transform,” May continues, rubbing at her moist eyes. “I just feel so bad you’re having to do this for me!”
“May,” Freddy replies sternly, holding her chin in his palm. “Yes, I’m worried about all this. I’m very worried about becoming a woman. Extremely nervous about becoming pregnant! But I want to do this! Like I said the other night—I’m excited you got this chance for us.”
May sniff and looks up into the bright blue eyes of her husband. “Y-yeah….?”
“Yes,” he smiles. “If that’s what it takes for us to have a family, I’m one hundred percent on board.”
May smiles wide with a toothy grin. She’s honored that her husband is willing to go through so much for her to live her dream.
“Sorry If I’m making you nervous,” Freddy smirks, letting go of May’s face and slumping back in his seat.
“It’s understandable,” May replies, fanning her eyes.
“I just can’t stop thinking about it all,” Freddy says, staring at the floor once again. “How tall am I going to be? How will my staff react to me being female? Will I get used to doing my makeup and hair? Will I have to wear heels…..,”
“Stop sweety,” May interrupts, gently laughing. “Let’s just take this a step at a time. Don’t forget we are doing this together. I’m scared about becoming a man too.”
“Yeah?” Freddy looks up surprised. “Being a man is not so bad.”
“You’ll find it the same with being a woman,” May grins. “Might be strange for us at first, but together, we will work it out.”
As the couple shares a moment together, looking lovingly into each other’s eyes, the waiting room door clicks open.
“Mr. and Mrs. Robinson…,” a young nurse says looking directly at the couple. “We are ready for you now.”
Freddy is the first one to stand. He gives the nurse a wry smile before turning to help his wife up. Helping May to her feet, they stand side by side and wait for direction from the nurse.
“Just a few checks first,” the nurse instructs, looking down at her chart. Flipping the page, she presses her index finger against the page in front of her.
“Have you both been to the toilet in the last thirty minutes?” the nurse asks frankly.
“Erm,” Freddy replies, knowing he tried. “I went number one but not number two.”
Bashfully brushing hair from her face, May smiles. “Yeah, we’ve been,” she tells the nurse.
Not reacting, the nurse ticks her sheet and then looks up once more. “Have you both removed all piercings, jewellery, or rings?”
Freddy looks down at the left hand. The absence of his wedding ring feels completely wrong. “Have you still got mine?” He asks May, looking at his wife with concern.
“Sure have,” May replies, pointing at the bag beside her feet.
“Good,” the nurse ticks.
Then she looks up from the clipboard with a serious expression. “Now,” she begins explaining, lowering the clipboard to her side. “The doctor has explained all the risks and potential side effects involved with this experimental procedure…. correct?”
Worried Freddy might get cold feet again, May looks over at Freddy hoping he doesn’t ask about them again. It took her days to bring him around to the idea. However, before May can say a single word, Freddy leans toward the nurse.
“This has been done before, right?” Freddy asks. “We aren’t the first ones.”
The nurse nods. “We’ve conducted thousands of tests and over sixty-nine procedures now. The majority of patients report instant feelings of euphoria.”
“Majority?” Freddy asks uncomfortably, rubbing his arm. “So, some haven’t gone well?”
The nurse scrunches her face before scratching her head with her pen. Looking down at her clipboard, she doesn’t say anything for a moment.
“Some will experience body disassociation and dysphoria,” the nurse admits. “But that has been extremely rare and usually fixed when the procedure is reversed six months later.”
“Oh….,” Freddy replies, looking at May with wide-open eyes full of worry
“Would you like for me to arrange for the doctor to come and speak with you again?” the nurse asks. “I know in this instance you are choosing us instead of the current IVF treatments and I know the doctor is keen to document the results.”
“That’s not necessary,” May answers, reaching out to hold her husband’s hand. “We’ve already discussed all of this as a couple.”
Freddy’s concentration soon turns to his wife gripping his hand tight. He feels the warmth of her hand and becomes at ease. As he smiles, the Nurse clicks her pen closed.
“I just want to say,” she smiles, turning on the spot to open the door behind her. “All the girls on the unit think you are very brave Mr. Robinson.”
The nurse opens the door and stands aside to welcome them through. “Oh yeah?” Freddy replies, grabbing the bag from the floor by May’s feet.
“Yes,” the nurse grins, opening her palm to guide them through the doorway. “We all think it’s extremely romantic how you’d go through all this for the woman you love.”
“You hear that May,” Freddy boasts, letting his wife through the door first. “I’m romantic.”
Shutting the door behind her as May and Freddy stand in the hallway that leads to the procedure room, the nurse giggles. “You just gotta hope Mrs. Robinson is just as romantic when she’s your husband."
“Oh, I will be!” May chortles, looking back at them both. “I plan to be the best husband ever! I won’t be letting him lift a finger when he’s pregnant.”
Freddy frowns as he gets impatient. “May,” he grumbles. “You say that like I’m not going to be able to look after myself.”
“Don’t argue about the help,” the nurse replies suddenly. “A woman’s body goes through a lot during pregnancy. I promise you’re going to be so thankful you’ve got a loving partner with you to help.”
Freddy rubs the side of his head and lets out a breath. “I’m always thankful I met my wife,”
“Sweet,” the nurse coos “I wish I could find a man like you.”
Reaching for Freddy to bring him close, May defends her man and lays claim to what is hers. “I’m sure you will,” she says to the nurse in an uptight tone. “So, where do we need to go now?”
“OH,” the nurse responds embarrassed, looking away from May’s glance. “Follow me.”
Squishing herself past May and Freddy in the narrow corridor, the nurse leads the way further into the facility. As they walk past several offices and laboratories, they eventually end up at Dr. Kalvin’s lab.
The nurse points at two separate rooms on either side of Dr. Kalvin’s office. “Mrs. Robinson, you will be in procedure room A, and Mr. Robinson, you will be in procedure room B.”
May peeks through the small glass window of the procedure room door. She wonders how exactly all of this works when she sees several large machines hovering over a single bed.
“You can leave that bag with me,” the nurse continues, reaching for the bag in Freddy’s hand. “We will take care of everything from here. You two just need to relax and listen to the instructions given.”
Freddy reluctantly hands over the bag to the nurse before also peeking through the glass window in the door to procedure room B.
“Do we get change inside?” Freddy asks timidly.
“Yes,” the nurse answers. “Please don’t worry. We are all set up and ready to go. The recovery rooms will be set up as requested.”
“Freddy,” May squeaks anxiously, taking his hand and turning him to look at her. “I love you.”
Freddy’s worries melt away as he looks into the beautiful eyes of his wife. “I love you too Hunny.”
“See you on the other side,” May says, forcing a smile and tiptoeing up to kiss Freddy on the lips.
“See you on the other side,” Freddy chuckles in reply as they both share a passionate kiss.
As they stop kissing, May embraces Freddy tight and puts her arms around his large frame.
Freddy puts his arms around the back of May’s head and brings her close to his chest. He doesn’t want to let her go.
“I hope you recognize me,” May mumbles into Freddy’s chest.
Freddy smiles as he kisses his wife on the top of the head.
“It’s going to be easy to recognize me,” he jokes. “I’ll be the one who can’t stop playing with his new breasts.”
“Freddy!” May laughs, playfully nudging me.
“What!?” he grins. “I’m only human!”
