The Reveal

“No way!” Jo groans as their best friend slumps his head. “Another girl said no…?”

“Argh!” Travis whines as he looks down at his feet. “I’m going to die sad and alone!”

“Don’t be so dramatic,” Jo says and pats him gently on the back.

Travis looks up and adjusts his backpack on his shoulders. He starts slowly walking away from the school gate and heading in the direction of home.

“Is there something wrong with me?” he asks as Jo quickly catches up, to walk beside him. “Am I just that ugly!”

“No, you’re actually quite handsome,” Jo answers and intentionally looks away.

“Dude!” Travis replies in disgust. “Thanks for trying to boost my confidence, but I’d rather you didn’t say things like that to me.”

“Oh…ok,” Jo answers with a wry smile. “So who’s the next girl on your list?”

Rubbing the back of his head, Travis goes a little red in the face.

“Errr ….Sophie was the last girl I realistically had a chance with,” he answers before allowing his arms to fall despondent to his sides.

“Oh,” Jo replies. “So you’re coming to prom alone….like me?”

“I can’t go without a date!” Travis animatedly answers back. “That’s only for losers!”

Jo stops walking and allows Travis to walk a few steps ahead. Travis soon stops and turns to face Jo with a confused expression.

“So….I’m a loser then?” Jo asks with a crack of emotion in their voice.

“Dude…come on!” Travis plea’s “You know I didn’t mean it like that. Still, why is it you don’t have someone you want to ask?”

“You know this already!” Jo responds with frustration, rubbing their eyes. “I’ve got absolutely no chance with the person I want to go with!”

Travis takes a few steps back and places a comforting hand on Jo’s shoulders.

“Yeah, I remember you saying,” he smirks “Who is this person and why won’t you tell me!”

Jo looks up at Travis’s smiling face and can’t help but smile back.

“You don’t wanna know,” Jo replies anxiously “……I’m not that upset about it.”

“Oh ok!” Travis grins. “I know you think you’re a little small and weedy for a guy, but I promise some chicks would dig the whole cute guy look.”

Jo blushes at his comments and swiftly looks away. Shrugging Travis off, Jo starts walking away in the direction they were heading

“That was a compliment!” Travis groans out in Jo’s direction, as he watches Jo slowly walk away. “Dude….. please, don’t make today any harder than it has to be!”

Looking back and giving him a bashful smile, Jo ushers Travis to catch up. Travis doesn’t wait around, he quickly jogs to catch up.

“Are we cool?” Travis asks as his jogs comes a slow walk.

“You’re an idiot,” Jo remarks. “Yeah, we’re cool.”

“Cool, cool,” Travis replies nonchalantly as they continue to walk side by side.

They get about a meter further before they hear a commotion coming from behind them. Both turn to see who’s calling out and once Travis sees it’s his younger stepbrother, he lets out a sigh.

“Oi oi!” Henry blurts out “If it isn’t my dorky brother and his little boyfriend!”

“Fuck you, Henry,” Travis shouts back as he forms fists with his hands. “Why you always gotta be like this?”

Henry strolls right up to them both and gets in Travis’s face. Although Henry is younger, he’s taller and much more mature-looking than his older stepbrother.

“Gotta be like what?” Henry gripes as he jabs Travis’s shoulder, causing Travis to stumble backward

“Just go away!” Travis whines as he regains his posture and swiftly turns his back. “Come on Jo, let's keep going.”

“Not so fast!” Henry laughs as he grabs Travis’s arm and roughly pulls him backward. “I hear from Sophie’s sister that she rejected your sorry ass for prom.”

Travis pulls his arm from Henry’s grip with one swift movement.

“So what if she did,” Travis growls with gritted teeth. “What business is it of yours!”

Grinning from ear to ear, Herny then jabs at Travis’s shoulder a second time.

“Makes me so sad to be related to such a dork like you!” Henry replies back in spite. “You're a loser, just like your dad!”

Travis stares him down with burning rage in his eyes. Jo can only look on as the two brothers square up to each other.

“You take that back!” Travis demands with fury

“Make me…” Henry says with a sinister smile.

Enraged, Travis grabs Henry by the scruff of the neck. He does his best to be intimidating, but Henry’s sheer size and confidence mean he’s undeterred by his actions. Travis tries his best to push Henry away, but he’s not strong enough.

“Such a loser,” Henry sneers as he grabs hold of Travis’s neck.

The panic in Travis’s eyes was very clear to see, as Henry starts crushing his windpipe. Travis soon lets go of his collar and immediately tries to break free, by trashing his arms around. He tries desperately to fight back, but it is of no avail. Henry is just bigger and stronger, and Travis knows he’s in trouble.

“Stop!” Jo cries out, as Travis’s face starts turning bright red. “You’re hurting him!”

“Shut it small fry,” Henry spits. “Or you’ll be next!”

Stepping back and reaching into a pocket, Jo slides out a cell phone. Shaking like a leaf, Jo brings the phone nervously up and points it in Henry’s direction.

“L-let h-him go,” Jo demands with a nervous voice crack. “I-I will f-film this and give it to the cops!”

Standing as tall as possible, Jo remains strong, with the phone’s camera pointed in Henry’s direction. Henry pulls a sneering expression, as he glares Jo down.

“Fine!” Henry sneers.

Moments later, Henry releases his grip on Travis’s throat. With a grunt and an upwards thrust of his arm, Henry pushes Travis away.

“You losers!” Henry growls as Travis buckles over and gasps for air.

Henry laughs and stands over him, as he continues to cough and splutter.

“Good thing your boyfriend was here to protect you!” Henry says with a sinister chuckle.

Shoving him and almost knocking him off balance, Henry starts walking away, leaving his brother gasping for air.

Jo quickly rushes over and comes to Travis’s aid.

“Are you ok!?” Jo asks Travis in an adrenaline-rushed panic.

“Y…..y-yeah,” Travis says with a small cough. “I-I’m ok.”

“What's his problem!” Jo questions with concern. “I can’t believe he just did that! He looked like he really wanted to hurt you.”

Standing up straight and rubbing his redraw neck, Travis takes a deep breath in.

“Jerk,” He spitefully growls in the direction Henry walked off.

“Come on!” Jo says calmly. “I know you said that you and Henry weren’t getting on….but I didn’t know the kid was a psycho! You’re certainly not going home straight away, I'm worried about what he might do. You can come around mine.”

“I can?” Travis asks with confusion, as they start slowly walking. “You’ve never let me come over yours before.”

Going bright red, Jo knows they are taking a risk. Although they’d been friends for years, Travis had never really been into Jo’s house. They’d always hung around at school or at the park.

Finally arriving at Jo’s house, Travis rubs his sore neck and lets out a little groan of pain.

Jo gives him a comforting smile, then proceeds to walk up the driveway. As they enter the house, Travis notes that Jo seems very on edge. Sneaking around the house, like Jo doesn’t want to be seen, they carefully make their way to Jo’s bedroom. As they enter, Jo gently shuts the door and locks it.

Trying his best to take in his new surroundings, Travis is a little shocked at what Jo’s bedroom looks like. He wasn’t expecting the pink pastel-colored walls or the excessive amounts of stuffed animal toys.

“Dude…….?” He asks bemused as they sit on the bed. “Is this really your room?”

Quickly sitting on the bed next to him, Jo gives him a small nod and smiles.

“It needs decorating,” Jo admits.

Travis pulls a face and looks around some more.

“It sure does,” he replies. “No wonder you don’t want to get a girlfriend. I’d be embarrassed to bring any girl in here.”

A moment of silence falls over them both.

“Why was Henry being like that!” Jo animatedly asks, trying to change the subject. “You’ve been trying so hard to get a date and he comes to attack you like that!”

Travis rubs his arm and lets out a sigh.

“I don’t know,” he says with emotion in his voice. “Ever since he got taller and started playing for the school team…..it’s like he’s changed completely. It’s like he’s a different person.”

Travis looks over to see tears welling up in Jo’s eyes.

“Dude…..,” he says uncomfortably “He’s my problem….not yours. What's with the waterworks?”

“It’s just I couldn’t help you at all!” Jo sobs as tears start rolling down. “I-I just felt useless.”

“Don’t be like that!” Travis replies and places a hand on Jo’s shoulder. “Henry is a big guy. I’d feel awful if you got hurt.”

Jo gives a despondent smile before wiping the tears away.

“Still, I just stood and watch him threaten you.” Jo continues saying with emotion. “ I want to make it up to you.”

Travis playfully pats Jo on the back and laughs.

“Don’t worry,” he smirks. “Unless you’ve got a girl who wants to go to prom with me, there is nothing I really want.”

“A girl…..?” Jo quickly questions with a loud sniff.

Laughing off his comment, with a slight hint of melancholy, Travis gives Jo a wry smile.

“Yeah,” he answers. “You know I’m desperate for someone to love me. Ever since my dad moved away and my Mom hooked up with Henry’s father, I’ve been feeling pretty alone.”

“That would really make you happy…..right?” Jo questions with intrigue. “A girl to take to prom?”

Travis rolls his eyes and looks around the room.

“Yeah…..I guess so,” he says softly. “It’s not just about the prom though. I really wanted to use prom as the kick-starter to a relationship.”

Jo looks up at him with interest.

“How’d you mean?” Jo asks.

“Well….,” Travis says as he nervously fidgets “I guess…..prom is a good excuse for me to ask the girls I fancy out.”

“Ah, I get you,” Jo replies with a nod. “What if I knew a girl that really liked you?”

Travis gives Jo a sarcastic look and gently pushes at Jo’s shoulder.

“Give over dude!” Travis laughs as Jo regains their balance. “We’ve already exhausted the girls that have any sort of interest in me.”

“That’s not true,” Jo answers with a devious smile directed straight towards Travis. “I know a girl that really likes you.”

Travis looks at Jo stunned.

“You do?” He replies completely blown away.

Looking Travis directly in the eyes, Jo playfully bites a lip and gives him a nod.

“Who!?” Travis asks impatiently

Shuffling off the bed, Jo points at the door.

“Meeting her would make you feel better?” Jo asks while blushing.

Grinning, Travis nods his head and gives a thumbs up.

“Yeah, I’d feel loads better!” he blurts out. “Who is it!?”

Still pointing at the door, Jo signals for him to leave the room.

“I will go get her, but you need to go wait downstairs.” Jo tells him “Tell my Mom I’m finally telling you. She will understand what you mean.”

“Errrrr…….,” Travis mumbles as he awkwardly walks towards the bedroom door. “O….kay.”

As Jo closes the door behind Travis, he wonders what the hell is happening. As far as he knows, Jo doesn’t have a sister or any girl mates. If she did have girl mates, he was going to be annoyed that he wasn’t introduced to them sooner!

Gently walking down the stairs, in an almost confused state, he soon finds himself walking into the kitchen where Jo’s mother is drinking coffee.

“You must be Travis,” Jo’s mom says with a big smile. “Jo’s tells me all about you.”

“Hello Mrs. Beaven,” Travis replies and stands awkwardly at the entrance to the kitchen. “Nice to meet you. Jo never usually invites me in.”

“Yeah,” Mrs. Beaven replies and takes a sip of coffee. “Interesting that you are here today. Did something happen?”

Travis rubs his still sore neck and looks away.

“Yeah,” he answers with a little embarrassment. “My step bother threatened me on the way home. I think it’s scared Jo a little, but I’m ok.”

“That’s awful!” Mrs. Beaven says as she stands and walks over to investigate Travis’s neck. “Do you want some ice for it?”

“No thanks!” Travis replies with a gin.

Mrs. Beaven then peaks out into the hallway. Turning back into the kitchen she pulls a confused expression.

“Where is Jo?” she questions looking a little anxious.

Leaning up against the counter, Travis gives a smile.

“He said I should tell you something…,” Travis looks down at his feet and gives it some thought. “Oh yeah! He said to tell you that he’s finally telling me…..or something along those lines.”

“Wait….what did you say?” Mrs. Beaven asks as she holds Travis by both shoulders.

As she stares Travis directly in the eye, he couldn’t help but feel a little uncomfortable. He has no idea what was going on. All he could think was; no wonder Jo never invited him in. Maybe his family is all a bunch of fruit loops.

“Err….,” Travis mumbles nervously “He’s told me there’s a girl who really likes me. I guess he’s talking with them on the phone right now and asking if they’d want to go to prom with me….”

Mrs. Beaven gives Travis an excited look then quickly turns to leave the kitchen. Travis is left very puzzled.

“Help yourself to anything In the fridge,” Mrs. Bevean calls back as she leaves the room. “I will find out what Jo’s doing and we will be back down in a moment.

With a wide-open mouth, Travis watches her rush upstairs. He rolls his eyes and huffs. He wonders how Jo’s mom is going to help with his girl issues.

Travis waits for a few minutes and just leans against the counter. Checking his phone every few minutes, the time just seems to drag. Walking over to the fridge, he takes a peek inside. It felt kinda rude, but he was getting a little bored waiting.

“How long does it take to ask a girl if they like me or not…..,” he mutters to himself as he picks out a can of soda.

Cracking open the can, he shuts the fridge door and leans against it.

“What if she’s ugly!?” he mumbles as he takes a small sip.

More time passes as Travis waits patiently in the kitchen. As he finishes his soda, he can’t help but start getting worried. His brain starts running through all sorts of scenarios. He even considered that Jo was going to ask his Mom to take him to prom.

Placing the empty soda can in the trash, Travis hears someone rushing down the stairs. As he looks up to see who it is, Jo’s mom comes bursting into the kitchen with a huge smile across her face.

“Jo….,” she says panting like she’s out of breath. “Jo wants you to come upstairs now.”

Pulling a face, Travis goes along with it. He slowly starts walking up the stairs with Mrs. Beaven following behind.

“Is he finished on the phone?” Travis asks as he looks back at Jo’s mom.

“Phone?” she questions with a quizzical look, as they reach the top of the stairs. “You really don’t know…..do you?”

“Sorry?” he replies with a vacant expression. “I don’t know…..what?”

Mrs. Beaven gives Travis a shake of the head and a quick smile.

“Look, all I’m going to say is this,” Mrs. Bevean says as they reach Jo’s door. “Just be nice….ok.”

Putting his hand on the door handle, he looks back at her and gives her a dour look. He wonders why she thinks he wouldn’t be nice? Jo’s his best friend.

Travis slowly opens the door and steps in. For a second the room looks empty.

“Hey……,” Jo says softly, almost startling Travis.

“Hey Jo,” Travis instantly replies as if on autopilot, without actually seeing him.

Turning his head to give Jo a smile, he gasps at what he sees. Standing in front of him, with a timid stance, was Jo, wearing a bright yellow ball gown. The curves of the dress cling to Jo’s body and an hourglass figure was clear to be seen. Although Jo’s flat chest struggled to fill the bust, the dress looked perfect and very pretty.

Jo’s hair was also brushed down and into a feminine style, with one of Jo’s eyes slightly hidden behind a feminine-looking fringe. Travis could also see that Jo had applied basic makeup. Jo’s eyes and lips sparkled with glitter and highlighted the cuteness staring back at him.

Jo’s hairless legs and bare chest, coupled with the kitten heels, give Jo a really feminine shape.

Still, like he’s trying to evade a T-Rex, Travis stands staring and silent. Trying to process what he see’s, mixed emotions swirl inside him. He doesn’t know if he should compliment his friends very pretty feminine look, or be very worried.

“D-do……,” Jo stutters and looks away from his fixated eyes. “Do you like it?”

Travis still doesn’t answer.

Jo flutters the dress from side to side and gives him a small wave. Trying and snap him from his obnoxious silence, she also curtsies.

“Travis!” Jo growls as she throws her hands down to her sides with frustration. “Stop staring at me like I’m an alien or something!”

“W-what……,” Travis finial says as he rubs his unbelieving eyes. “Jo……what are you doing in that dress?”

Giving him a bashful smile, Jo looks down at herself in the dress.

“I’ve had it for ages…..,” she explains “Do you like it?”

“I guess,” Travis quickly snaps back. “But, why are you wearing it. Are you telling me that you want to crossdress for prom….so I’ve got someone to go with..?”

“Crossdress?” Jo angerly replies. “What do you mean crossdress?”

Travis is stunned at her angry reaction. He has no idea what he’s said wrong. As far as he understands, his best mate has just stood in front of him wearing a very frilly dress.

“Do….. you like dressing like a girl?” Travis nervously asks.  “I’m not sure about taking a guy in a dress to prom.”

Jo pulls a sour face then swiftly looks away.

“Are you serious!?” Jo cries as she folds her arms, trying and cover her chest. “I’m fucking girl you dope!”

Not sure what to say or do, Travis looks completely stunned. With his mouth wide open, he just stares vacantly in Jo’s general direction.

“Sorry, I always wanted to tell you,” Jo says, as her anger turns to embarrassment “Please don’t think bad of me!”

Travis raises a hand and points down at her crotch.

“All…..this…..time…….?” He asks slowly “All this time you’ve been a girl?”

Blushing like a ripe tomato, Jo looks up and into Travis’s eyes. She’s on the verge of tears as she feels like Travis is about to flip out.

“…….Yes……,” she replies quietly, as the tears in her eyes start rolling down her face.

Allowing his arm to fall to his side, Travis’s mind was in overdrive. He couldn’t help but think about all the things they’d done together. All the things he’d told her. How she’s his best friend, but he never knew.

Travis’s eyes than fix onto Jo’s. For a few fleeting moments, the two friends look eye to eye, in complete silence.

“Why…..?” He asks with genuine confusion. “Why have you been hiding your gender from me?” Why are you telling me this now?”

Jo breaks eye contact and looks down at the floor, defeated. Shuffling her feet, she wipes the tears from her face.

“Tell me….!” Travis demands.

“I…….,” Jo squeaks. “I…wanted to make you happy!”

“What?” Travis replies. “How?”

Jo looks up and stares him straight in the eye. He could see the passionate expression on her face.

“After what happened today,” she passionately replies “You seemed so down about everything!”

“And….?” Travis questions as he shifts around uncomfortably

“I hate my girly body, Travis!” Jo screams. “I hate it so much I hide it from people! I’m only showing you this because I have the chance to make you happier. I’m hoping you’ll look past my lying and allow me to be the girl you take to prom!

“But……why?” Travis answers

“Because…… I love you!” Jo answers before turning her back on him and crying into her hands.

Blown away by her admission, Travis could feel his heart racing and his body shaking. The tense emotional outcry from his best friend was enough to shake him to his core.

Stepping forward, he places a single hand on one of her bare shoulders. Gently turning her around to face him, he could see the tears streaming down her cheeks. Putting both his hands around her shoulders, he pulls her in close and presses her head against his chest in a loving embrace.

As Jo continues to sob into Travis’s chest, she brings her arms around him and hugs him back.

“Thank you…..,” Travis whispers

With her head still presses against his chest, Jo looks up at him.

“For……. what?” she asks with a sniff.

“For,” Travis starts before stopping to steady his emotions. “For being my friend. For showing me this. For wanting to make me happy……Thank you.”

A small and grateful smile appears on Jo’s face.

“So…,” Travis asks softly “Is Jo short of Josephine?”

She nods in agreement and continues to smile at him.

Travis allows Jo to exit his embrace before he grabs her hand and looks deeply into her eyes.

“Josephine,” he says with a formal tone. “Will do me the honor and allow me to take you to prom?”

Blushing, Jo smiles and grips tightly onto his hand.

“Of course I will you idiot!” she replies sarcastically. “But please just call me Jo!”

“Sure!” Travis grins.

Taking a step back and presenting herself, Jo twirls on the spot, allowing Travis to see her dress in all its glory.

“So…..do you think I’m pretty enough to rub it in your brother's face?” Jo asks with a smirk.

Feeling a small movement downstairs, Travis smirks back.

“Yeah!” he says in disbelief. “I can’t believe how stunning you are!”

Jo stops and smiles.

“Hey…,” Travis asks as he brings Jo close to him once more. “This person you wanted to ask and had no chance with…..”

“Yeah,” Jo answers, going bright red

“It’s me….. right?” Travis asks with a playful expression.

“Oh shut up!” Jo laughs “Alright,…..yeah,….it’s you!”

“Awesome!” Travis cheers. “So it’s a date then!”

Tilting her head to one side, Jo smiles. “It’s a date!”
