Chernobyl Episode 1

Comments

BISS The man who was ordered to call in the day shift was not the man who killed himself in the beginning of this episode. The man who killed himself was the main character physicist who saved millions of lives.

This looks to be a great series, thanks for watching. I think this is gonna be very frustrating to watch. The amount of finger pointing and redirecting blame is crazy. The lies too!! Especially the self lies these guys are deluding themselves with. If it was me, I don't think I could lie to myself this much about a life or death situation I'm in. Thanks for all your content!

Regarding the knowledge of radiation in the '80s: We (humanity as a whole) knew a lot by then. There had already been several "criticality incidents" in labs where scientists died pretty gruesome deaths after just seconds of exposure to lethal amounts of radiation (there was even a famous U.S. test object of plutonium nicknamed "the Demon Core" - it managed to irradiate and kill scientists on two separate occasions). Not to mention we had decades of statistical data of radiation effects on humans after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Another interesting criticality incident to read about is that of Cecil Kelley, who was exposed to a short but intense burst of gamma radiation (about 1 second) at Los Alamos in the 1950s, which caused him a horrifying death just a day and a half later (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_Kelley_criticality_accident). Looking forward to watching this series alongside you, Biss! It's harrowing, but a necessary watch, I think.

I think a lot of credit should go to HBO and the creators of this show because they really don't restrain themselves from showing the harsh and tragic reality of this disaster. While it is difficult to see the effects of this on the people and the environment, it is important that the truth is revealed. And maybe something like this doesn't ever happen again if the lessons are learned about what not to do under these circumstances.

Fun fact,, Craig Mazin is the creator, writer and producer of Chernobyl series. He is also creator, writer and executive producer of The Last of Us TV series.

Biss, the trees you noticed are part of what is now known as the Red Forest. It is a vast and highly contaminated area , entry is strictly forbidden. When the Russians invaded Ukraine in Feb. 2022 they "capture" the area around the Chernobyl reactor and ordered their soldiers to dig defensive trenches in this radio active ground.within days several hundred had to be evacuated to Belarus with severe radiation sickness and for many it was fatal. Regarding how much and how far the pollution travelled, I've met old farmers here in the U.K and they were unable to sell sheep for several years after the explosion because the dose of radiation were too high for the meat to go into the food chain.( a lot of sheep farming here takes place on high ground which are areas of high rainfall) The U.S.S.R continued to deny there was any problem with radiation pollution for many days after the event.. They only admitted it after nuclear workers in Sweden who cycled to work showed much higher levels of contaminatoin when they were tested BEFORE a shift than was allowed by their safety people. So the contamination had to be coming from another source and the wind had been coming from the south for several days this discovery. Look forward to the rest of your reactionto this series.

They explain what happened in the last episode.

I was born in 1984. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident occurred in 1986 and was 439 km away from the closest part of Romania. The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident occurred in 1979 and was 147 km from where I grew up. The closest nuclear power plant to where I grew up was 24 km away. I could see the steam stacks from my home. My uncle who lived one block away from me was a career electrician at that power plant. We had potassium iodide pills on hand, as well. We definitely paid attention to nuclear power plants growing up. This will be a brutal series for sure. May be worth looking into Three Mile Island at some point, as well. That one also had documentaries.

Yes, they explain why it shouldn't have exploded and why it did anyway. it will become more frustrating and gruesome. keep your tissues close

What's really crazy is that there are survivors still alive today who speak about their experience. Some who were right there near ground zero. HBO has a great documentary about Chernobyl if you get a chance to watch. One being that Chernobyl was plant not only for energy but also for weapons. The KGB were stationed there and the documentary provides more interesting details about it that were not depicted in this series.
