Ya I think so too, but I think the fan was also to heighten the pressure of the situation too, with a background sound that is constantly kind of grating, like nails on a chalkboard. Creates a sense of unease and just stress, to me at least.

For me I can not be even watching an old movie, but if I hear the audio I can tell. It's the vocal acting style and how they mixed the audio. Everything sounds a bit more high pitched and the music usually uses more high pitched instruments in the orchestra, like flutes and woodwinds. I also think they mix the music and sound effects alot louder back then too.
