When they say you got sand it means you got courage

Will Ryder

You said you didn’t know about slavery in the US. So, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation before the dead were all buried at the Battle of Gettysburg. The problem was that issuing it didn’t do anything. You can say, “I hereby free the slaves!” to your heart’s content but that doesn’t take a single soul out of bondage behind the Confederate lines. So, Lincoln had to pass the 14th Amendment AND win the war. Failure to do both would sink the whole plan. Now, the US was at war. Lincoln was a wartime President for practically his entire time in office. This was beneficial because Presidents in war have more power than peacetime Presidents. No one could possibly object to a President ordering his troops to seize or destroy all the enemy’s property. If a rebel farmer has a horse and is growing food for the enemy, no one will bat an eye if troops take his horse and burn his crops to the ground. Here’s the problem, though: the South claims the slaves living there and working for them are property. If the South is right, then Lincoln’s Army can legally take them. The North wanted to say that the black folk living down South were that, were folk, people not property. If the slaves are people the North can’t ‘kidnap’ them. Further, if Lincoln doesn’t get the 14th Amendment passed then the war could end and some court could decide that they are, in fact, property. If the Southern states rejoined the Union without the 14th Amendment already passed, then the Southern States would never vote for it. Lincoln got the 14 Amendment passed and then added the 15th & 16th Amendments for good measure. The 14th Amendment freed the slaves, the 15th Amendment made the freed slaves citizens and the 16th gave the right to vote to, at first, the freed men. All American women were granted the right to vote with the 19th Amendment. One problem for Lincoln was that, as he was trying to get the 14th passed, the South realized the war was lost and offered to end the fighting, lay down their arms and rejoin the country if they could keep their slaves. Politicians from the Northern states were, generally speaking, against slavery in principle but after 4 years of war and millions of soldiers killed, northern politicians wanted the war to end more than the slaves freed.

From all Tarantino movies I watched this is actually the most boring one in my opinion. I still enjoy some of the acting, but most of the script just feels so slow and unfocused. I kind of felt the same exhaustion I felt while watching kill bill vol 2, which I then even never finished. Once upon a time in Hollywood again worked really well for me. All time favorite is Inglorious Bastards together with Pulp Fiction.

Dentist was the best for me. No hesitation.

Biss did anyone tell you yet that Quentin Tarantino was in this movie as the Australian that gets blown up when Django shoots the dynamite he has after Django shooting shoots his two mates?

A MARSHAL has FEDERAL Jurisdiction...A SHERIFF is more local dealing with town matters generally.

The way I judge an actor is whether I see the actor or the character. In these roles, I saw Leonardo DiCaprio, I saw Christolf Waltz, I saw Samuel L. Jackson, and I saw Django. And yes, Biss, unfortunately this is what life was like in the Antebellum South. Not even close to my favorite Tarantino movie. 2 out of 5 for me. Wasn't very impressed with the acting, Tennessee isn't that flat and treeless, those are western mountains, not Appalachian, and they didn't wear spurs in Tennessee. I also am not fond of how T uses modern music on period pieces. But I still enjoyed your reaction.

Bandmaidfanatl

yeah that was a fun movie

Best actor Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen Warren. I thought he was just perfect. I gib movie 4.5 out of 5 stars. Not quite Tarantino's best but really damn Good. TY TY.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is another Tarantino movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Tarantino said in an interview, recently, that he thinks it's his best film. I loved it. If you decide to watch it, you might want to look into Charles Manson, if you don't know about him already. The movie will make a lot more sense.

Adam

I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but as a Tarantino movie, I don't think this one is all that great. It is just not that good as Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs. It is better than Inglourious basterds though. Again just my opinion. 3 out of 5. Do agree with everyone that you see The Revenant, and The Departed.

Andrew Zachman

Loved the reaction. If you are interested in other DiCaprio movies then i would say Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Departed (2006), and The Revenant (2015) as the ones I would suggest giving a watch

I'm also kind of torn between Christoph Waltz and Leo Dicaprio regarding who my favorite was in the movie. For me, Christoph did an incredible job and I loved his character more than any other. However, when considering the acting alone, separate from character preference, Leo gave the most compelling performance in my view.

Robert Healy

Another great movie with Leo Dicaprio is The Revenant (2015). Highly recommend it if you haven't seen it already. It's based on a very interesting true story. It has Tom Hardy in it, another actor I believe you like a lot. Also, Leo won his first and only Academy Award for Best Actor from his work in the film.
