About Indian/Native American scalping: it’s their most infamous method of mutilation. The Romanian equivalent would be impaling (what Vlad did to the Ottoman sultan). It’s particularly gruesome, not all American Indians did it, but it got culturally (in)famous. So it’s often depicted in movies, books, etc, as you can see it being discussed here and demonstrated in Inglorious Basterds.

The Outsiders is not a Tom Cruise movie but he is in it. So are many other great actors I highly recommend it. Also Tropic Thunder has Tom in it for about 10 minutes and the show is funny if you dont mind some questionable humor.

Yeah the first time I seen this was expecting some kind of straight up action movie. But no no no this has real emotional depth to it, excellent story and characters, and incredible cinematography. Yup 5 out 5 for me as well. Very very nice to revisit this with you.

I greatly underestimated how much you would like this movie. I knew it would be more of your theme than mine because of the Japanese culture, sword fighting, etc. I actually forgot most of the movie but watching it brought it all right back. It's like a Japanese Braveheart, but I'd say I like this one more. Glad you were able to appreciate it despite your opinions of Tom Cruise. I'm proud of you again.

This movie reminds me a lot of the movie Dances with Wolves. Both lead characters of these movies go thru a similar journey. Might want to check Dances with Wolves (1990) as well.

Yeah Tom Cruise in real life is not really likeable in my opinion. However he has done some great movies like this as well as Edge of Tomorrow and the mission impossible franchise. Maybe try these movies as well.

From my understanding the character of Nathan Algren is based on the real history of a French Army officer named Jules Brunet. So naturally there's a European and Asian connection so I personally didn't mind.

It's more a reference to the era of Hollywood when they were reluctant to make a major studio movie about another culture without having a white character to center the story around. Maybe White Savior isn't the right term
