It's character writing like this that really makes characters feel multi-dimensional. So much intentionality was put into this and I think anyone who can appreciate Re:Zero as a series can really appreciate what is done here. Loved hearing your thoughts after. Looking forward to watching your reaction to the rest of the series!

2025-05-12 03:37:33 +0000 UTCS2E4 my favorite episode, I really loved that we see Subaru's past and one of the really rare stories that actually makes you think that getting teleported to another world isn't just happy go lucky situation. For most people it would be a horror as you would have no way to see your parents or anyone you cared in our world. Ps. Author of Re:Zero said that Subaru's real parents filed a missing person report to police and both them cry thinking something happened to him. Author was asked what about the parents and he only told this.

The want to be Emilia's hero, the sadness and anger at not being trusted with her affairs, the desperation to prove himself at all costs, claiming its cos "they think I'm useless.." all the insecurities and his character flaws add up now. Even Subaru's rant to Rem in Episode 18, the one where you called him a whiny bitch. The one where he confessed to Rem that he knows he's a worthless, useless nobody and always knew he was nothing special powerless to do anything. So when Rem tried letting him know he isn't, that he has done good things, that he saved her.. Subaru just didn't want to accept and believe her words. Because his view of himself was so warped from all the suffering, and the failures and having nobody to be there for him.. it brought back all his buried feelings of self hatred. It really is sad to see thinking back on Episode 1 of the show, to realize Subaru started the story in such a terrible state and we just never knew it. We just took his random burst of happiness and optimism and annoying cringe for what it was at face value thinking that's all he was. When there was so much pain, anxiety and self hatred he had hidden the whole time.
