Vinland Saga S2 EP 21 & 22 - UNCUT

That is actually a really good way of putting it. I never really saw it that way before, thank you! I didn't mean that in the way that Olmar is like his father fully, of course he's a better person than Ketil is. I just thought that he inherited the kind side from his father, but after reading your comment I can see that I didn't quite understand Ketil and everything you said about him makes total sense. Thank you again for correcting my image of Ketil.

Honestly I really REALLY feel like its an insult to say he took after Ketil. Especially when that's followed by "so kind". Ketil didn't like to fight and sure he got that from him but Ketil was also a coward that could never really commit to doing the right thing. He always did half-good and only the good that was easy. When it came to slavery he didn't just out and out free people he bought them which means he helps fund slave operations and then has them work for years as free labor and THEN letting them go. That might be better than full slavery but the point is Ketil always takes the path that requires the least courage. The path that makes the least waves and the path that upsets the least people while making him seem like a good guy. He chose not to punish either side when it came to the crops even though the freed men were 100% in the wrong and he knew it because it was easier for him that way. He chose to only beat the child HALF to death instead of just letting them off the hook despite feeling like it was the wrong thing to do because if he didn't his son would be upset. There's more to it but consistently Ketil chooses to do the thing that keeps the peace instead of the actual right thing to do because he's fake and just in general lacks any actual convictions. The second his pride or self image was threatened he lost his mind and beat the woman who had his child in him until she died from it. He's nothing but vanity pretending to be goodness. To kinda remix a quote from MLK: Ketil prefers the presence of peace even if it means the absence of justice. He is not a good man. He is a weak spineless man that doesn't actually stand for anything but keeping up appearances and patting himself on the back despite never risking anything or showing any courage to do the right thing. I am personally offended on behalf of my boy Olmar hearing someone say he takes after his dad lol He has FAR eclipsed his father and Ketil sucks all the way through.

Last two episodes are peak.

Olmar has come such a long way man. He wanted to be a warrior so badly. He wanted to go to war. Now that he's killed a man and seen what war brings, he clearly regrets it. He really takes after his father. He's in reality a kind person that doesn't want to see people get hurt or die. I'm so proud of him of coming to the decision to not keep fighting and losing lives. It takes a true man to admit defeat and understand when you're just losing more people just for the sake of your own pride. His brother wasn't trying to make him feel better, he was just saying that to manipulate him into agreeing to keep fighting. He's actually really smart, as you could see before the war started, he gathered everyone without telling them that it's the king they are fighting against. And at that point it was too late for everyone to leave. He may seem like a brute, but he knows what he's doing. He didn't even think twice about sacrificing every single person on the battlefield, including his dad, just for his ambush on the king. I'm also proud of Olmar actually standing up to him. From our perspective it seems logical to surrender, but back them people viewed it differently. There was glory in death in battle. It makes sense for Thorgil to not want to give up. So finally we go back to Thorfinn. He mentioned the other episode that he wanted to try solving a problem without resorting to violence. To solve a conflict with words alone. Betting on himself not running away after taking the punches is like a vow to himself that he won't run away from it. He's literally staking his life on the line for his ideal of not continuing meaningless violence. He wants to prove to everyone including himself that he can come through this and solve it by not fighting. I respect it. What Thorfinn says is really true, they didn't try to protect the farm by talking. Nobody did. Everyone instantly jumped to the conclusion that the only option was to just go to war. The determination in Thorfinn after he got up is insane. If there's anyone that could do it, it's Thorfinn. And the silence at the end really tells you that everyone respects Thorfinn for doing this. Nobody expected it. And this is what being a true warrior means. A true warrior doesn't need a sword. "I can't hit someone when I'm trying to negotiate for peace" what a line. It's so true as well because he could've beaten the guy easily with violence, but it took a real man to defeat someone like him with words alone. It's so crazy to see Thorfinn become a pacifist like Canute was back in season 1 and Canute become a person who kills his enemies like Thorfinn did in season 1. Both of them literally just switched their positions. Canute sees the only way to create his paradise by power, by uniting the world itself while Thorfinn has finally seen what death brings and how horrible war is towards everyone. It's a cool contrast of characters. "I don't have any enemies." As cheesy as it is, it is a line that really changed my life. This whole episode changed my life. Thorfinn withstanding those 100 punches really showed that there is always a way to solve a conflict without resorting to violence. And well, while you might not literally fight everyone physically in today's world, using fighting words and getting angry at someone, be it online or offline, is kind of similar. There's no reason to instantly start getting angry at someone. You could always try to see their point of view or politely disagree. There's no reason to stir up conflict. You should strive to solve problems by just calmly talking it out. That's what I learned from that. I mean it should be obvious that you shouldn't get angry at people and you should try to solve everything peacefully, but it's not the first thing that usually comes to your mind. More people should take after Thorfinn and really think twice before doing something that could hurt another person. Be it verbally or physically.

Thorfinn vs 100 punches genuinely might be my favourite moment from the entire show.
