LAST ACTION HERO (1993) - Movie WATCH ALONG!!

Comments

Great watchalong!! Arnie's "Last Action Hero" was a fave that summer '93 (and when it came to VHS rental) for me and my best friend in High School. We saw LAH in near empty cinemas probably 4 times while folks were watching Jurassic Park over and over and over, which I did too but we wanted to give LAH movie love that summer as well as we loved Arnie, the concept, all the cameos etc... LAH had massive promos I recall, on par with T2 '91 & JP '93. From Arnie Willis Demi's "Planet Hollywood" franchise openings (which I think we got in Seattle that summer or '94?) MTV's The Big Picture with longtime film/music/news journalist Chris Connelly's cameo & ET alumni Liza Gibbons (who is also cameos in Verhoeven's Robocop) and Entertainment Tonight, they all had so many BTS/making of and interviews for LAH...even though LAH didn't do great, since Summer '93 was Jurassic Fever strong, but this one was an often watched fave in High School, and summer of '94 Reeves & Bullock in "SPEED" would be the next action blockbuster my besties and I would become obsessed with. *M.C. Hammer was the "we gonna do the Slater 5 soundtrack" cameo. *how could ya'll forget "Ms. Veronica Vaughn" from Billy Madison and "Sonya Blade" from OG '95 Mortal Kombat lol...Brigette Wilson was a total '90s crush, and being a longtime pro tennis fan, it was cool to see Brigette marry Pete Sampras :)

This movie was just ahead of it's time. My best friend and I saw it in theatres - I think we were Juniors in high school when this came out - and we loved it. It's got that Hot Fuzz quality to it, a love letter to action schlock films, but the American version. This is more about the over the top ness of everything and HF is more focused on the goofy character stereotypes. The soundtrack for this did better than the actual movie, IIRC. "Angry Again" by Megadeth was all over the radio for ages. Knew you guys would love this one tho. Seems like every reactor I've seen do this are 1) baffled it's not more well know, 2) absolutely love it, 3) surprised how dark it turns at the end with Benedict's speech about bad guys being able to win in the real world. Nice it's getting it's due these days. Like I said and as yall pointed out - this movie was just too ahead of it's time. People were expecting another run of the mill action flick and not a fun commentary on the genre.

One of my favourite movies growing up. I always wanted to be the kid! Used to have it on cassette and then bought it on DVD! Think it’s still at my mum’s house haha
