ARRIVAL (2016) - Movie WATCH ALONG!!

Comments

I have always been fascinated with linguistics and the philosophy of language and communication and I'm a HUGE sci-fi buff so this movie really hit all the right notes for me. I don't think people think about communication this deeply. Even when you learn a foreign language, most people treat it like you're learning translations and they seldom think about the breadth of important information held within the structure of a sentence or phrase. So I bet a lot of people came out of theatres with their minds absolutely blown by this. It was really rewarding to see a movie take on such a complex idea especially given the fact that it's not as accessible or flashy as your average alien flick.

I love the exploration of language, not only in the aliens but within english itself. for instance, the first time we meet Agent Halpern, he is being explained to in a very scientific/dry way how it takes time for the alien's pod to acclimate to the atmospheric pressure, but the agent responds with "so they can suffocate us if they want to?" what a beautiful way to show how language can be shaped by emotion and internal prejudices.

This is easily one of my top 3 films of the 2010s. I saw it in theaters, and the score, sound effects, and visuals were so intense. I have watched it many times now, and it's still really amazing on the rewatch. When you already know the overall story and you can really focus on the narration and dialogue the whole time, it's even more emotional. Every time Louise says "Who is this child?", I get shivers. It's a beautiful story, with so much heart (while still being so tense). Great reaction! I'm so glad you liked it!

If you want to see one of Jeremy Renner’s best and underrated roles, checkout Wind River. It is an incredible crime thriller. Also, stars Elizabeth Olsen as well.

Cody Price

Saw this in theaters on a whim and to be honest, I didn't fully understand it til the second time I saw it. Great reaction.
