Chapter 10 of No Joy in Command is out for Squires!

Slightly late, but I'm happy with how this one came out. The plot thickens, almost like cheese does. Let me know your thoughts.

You can read the previous chapters in the collection!

Chapter 10 of No Joy in Command is out for Squires!

In Gladiusx we trust! I've seen quite a few ripples already with Jon's presence that may have gone unnoticed on a quick read through.

Ambrose Young

I’m actually wondering if the kraken is gonna make its presence known during the Battle of the Gullet.

Maniac000

Binged this whole series just now. I’m absolutely loving it. I’m betting the thing to fire Jon up is going to be his inevitable throw down with that Kraken. That tentacled asshole has been campaigning for an asswhooping and he’s gonna get elected.

Based_Bass

Jon paid her and gave her the opportunity to leave before he got in trouble for beating the shit out of the Velaryons. She took the money and left.

Best thing about this story is how much distance Jon is trying to keep from the historical events. Every other fic would already have him in the thick of it trying to change history. And that he’s not trying to convince ppl he’s from the future. Now, my prediction, I think Rhaena will claim Silverwing in this.

Maniac000

As a proper story should! It's not all action! It's about the build up and character building. I actually like Ser Broome now haha

Ambrose Young

I did say I intend to do less PoVs this time and tighter storytelling, which means you'll see a lot more of a few selected characters, and not necessarily all of it will be interesting, since I can't endlessly escalate. Also, I believe character interactions that I have written out in detail are essential to the plot.

Gladiusx

Somewhere in the sea, waiting to be fished out. Don't worry, Jon won't be fishing for the whole story lmao. Also, Jon is far from hedonistic, considering he has yet to overindulge or remotely indulge in any of the classical vices.

Gladiusx

I did say this will be a tighter story with far fewer PoVs. You don't really need to doubt much for the size of the story, because I really don't think I have plot for over 30-35 chapters at most. As much as I want to, I can't ramp up things endlessly, at some point I have to wind down a little. Speaking of ripples that Jon makes, Ser Alfred Broome is one giant, giant ripple right there, considering he's one of the main Rhaenyra betrayers, that lead to her dead. As for show versus tell, it's a matter of pacing. Things happen in the background, but they're hardly important to be all be 'shown' unless you want an endless deluge of slice of life. I believe I have gotten a basic idea of what needs to be 'shown' and what needs to be 'told', so please have some more trust in me. x)

Another wonderful chapter - enjoy how it doesn’t rush into pushing Jon into action but slowly develops his reasoning. I don’t begrudge his apathy (especially with how inevitable the long night is from his perspective). Would be interesting to see what (if any) events push him to become involved

I’m a bit disappointed with this chapter, your other fanfics had me waiting for updates but it’s the second week were I struggle to want to read, is it going to continue to be this slow? A lot of the info could have been a few paragraphs.

A fun chapter, nice to see Jon making friends. Now I know it’s early in the morning for me. But I don’t remember at all what Nettles did. That would make her run off.

Alex Woll

This time Ser Broome just might betray Rhaenyra for Jon cause he think a man like that is better than her and he can say i know the future King, train with him, eat from his bounty ......

VishihaHitachi

I enjoyed the chapter. Broome is becoming a halfway friend to Jon, which is good. Isolation is overrated. Jon expanding into cheesemaking is hilarious. Rather than fight, he’s decided to become a wealthy burgher. There are worse fates. Rhaenyra is grinding the smallfolk under her boot. Probably without intending to do. I doubt she spared them a thought. At this point, Jon is more attuned to the smallfolk’s needs then their putative princess. Thanks for writing. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

The hedonism of Jon while Interesting at first is becoming to much. Where is the ambition ?

khalid musadak

Huh, I thought Grey Ghost was going to be her's. But, no complaints from me 😄 Let's just hope it's not Helaena 🤞

Tbh I find myself a bit disappointed. This is the second week in which nothing notable happens. Furthermore I'm starting to doubt the intention of keeping NJIC to half of SD. For example the interaction between Jon and Ser Alfred Broome could be condensed in half a page, yet you went with almost 3 pages trying to "show" more then "tell" what is happening outside Jon's ivory tower (same shit as before). I want to see the ripples Jon's actions make. True, so far he isn't in a position to make changes to how events went the first time, however I think a conversation between Otto and Larys regarding Jon's possible status as a bastard of Viserys would be nice. When counting dragons for the Blacks, as far as everyone else knows, Jon is a weak maybe, weaker then Rhaena, but still a good strategist would not ignore the possibility. Yes, maybe the cheese maker is a spy for the Greens, but in that case I think it's better to make the reader wonder. Show a conversation between Otto and Larys, mention a spy, then add the same amount of description for each new hire in Jon's extended house, so that any one of them could be it.

It’s genuinely refreshing to see how little Jon cares about all the Targ bullshit beyond the fact that they’re taxing him more. I do believe he’s become the spirit animal of many. Also, I do rather regret that he didn’t end up being (begrudgingly) sent north as part of the envoy so he could find baby Ghost II. Would have been fun but I think the current situation makes for better entertainment value.

MehOhWell

I’m thinking Rheana and I’m thinking she’ll be the pretty wife Jon was talking about.😁

I don’t really care how this goes, as I love every moment of it, I just have one request….. in the end please let it be that the targs are the only dragon riding family. The fact Rhaenys didn’t marry Viserys is the first step in the dilution of power and the catalyst to the dance. Corlys hustled the targs immaculately.

NobleBoy24 .

Bronze and silver looks like it. Any thoughts on who's going to be Silverwing's rider?

And eventually breed some more

Bishop7053

Well, season 1 is done. Let's see how long Jon keeps denying his need to preserve some dragons.
