Longhunter

Here's the first 2000 words of my new story, Longhunter.

A cartographer sets out on a mission of discovery, mapping a strange, foreign continent full of exotic beasts and mysterious natives at the behest of his employer. The further he heads Westward, the more bizarre his journey gets, the very land itself somehow twisted and blighted. Despite the danger, he is compelled to press on by a plea for help from a stranger who believes that he may be her people's only hope of salvation.

This is the first post-Pastebin story, and I'm actually pretty happy with the level of control I have over the formatting, and how my workload is actually decreased by not having to use different formatting on different sites, but let me know how your reading experience goes.

The last 20,000 words are edited. I’ll be making the Ebooks tomorrow.

Snekguy

Another 15,000 words edited, chapters 9 to 11. I’m expecting to have the editing finished by tomorrow, then I can make the Ebooks.

Snekguy

Another 12,000 words edited, from chapter 8 to chapter 9.

Snekguy

Another 10,000 words edited, chapter 7 to 8. I’m past the halfway point, but it is taking a little longer than expected due to having to work on artwork and videogame-related stuff at the same time.

Snekguy

Another 10,000 words edited, chapter 6 to 7.

Snekguy

Another 20,000 words edited, chapters 4 to 6.

Snekguy

Another 10,000 words edited, chapters 3 to 4.

Snekguy

Editing on Longhunter has begun, and is expected to take six days. The first 20,000 words are done, chapters one to three.

Snekguy

While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I found the ending to be rather abrupt. In other news, I should be spending some time on my story tomorrow (well today technically).

Robert Gilbert

Final update, new content at “Farewell, Sam,” It’s finally finished, with a total word count of 117,000. I’ll get to editing it soon, which should take about 6 days, then I’ll be making the Ebooks.

2000 word update, new content at “My kin knew what awaited them,” Added a small section a little earlier just mentioning Tia's flowers, because I forgot to add them back in.

Snekguy

2000 word update, new content at 'Black tar leaked from its eyes like tears'

Snekguy

I'll give it another look over if you feel it was jarring. Perhaps something snappier and harder for the characters to react to instead.

Snekguy

2000 word update, new content at 'Another of the undead Blighters came staggering into view'

Snekguy

Not sure I like the way this part of the scene played out, personally. It feels like it occurred because the plot needed it to, rather than a logical follow up to what's happened so far. The lack of worry and reaction about whatever the old man was doing, when George even professed worry about his abilities just beforehand, and not even reacting when it became clear he was raising the bodies, felt like a uncharacteristically slow and foolish response after all the previous build up. To me at least.

Snekguy

Looking at getting Pinwheel done right now if we can afford it. If not, maybe Warband.

Snekguy

Wow.

Robert Gilbert

Was a bit too busy for an update today, but we are currently in talks with a voice actor who may be doing an audiobook if we can afford the rates.

Snekguy

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, estaenlasombra. Learning about firearms is kind of an ongoing process for me, as I have no background with them, so I'll keep that in mind next time I write a range scene.

Snekguy

I adore this story, especially the lovely worldbuilding. I also enjoy your creative take on the Windigo. I do have one suggestion, and this is more of a personal nitpick as someone who has spent a decent amount of time around firearms (this also applies to some of the scenes in the Pinwheel series). The absolute first thing anyone who habitually carries a gun will do when instructing a novice is to ensure that they understand proper safety before even letting them touch the thing. A lot of that won't apply in the time period you're aiming for in the same way it would today; I doubt the three rules of firearm safety were around then. Still, it's something to think about. Maybe that's a criticism better aimed at some of the range scenes in the Pinwheel series.

I’ve had similar thoughts. Huge gold deposits and a substantial technological advantage is a receipts for disaster for the natives. Perhaps magic will even the playing field?

I’m a little nervous about appealing to the company’s greed for help. It seems like kindling for future strife, if they make it out now

2000 word update, new content at “Mine believe in an afterlife,”

2000 word update, new content at 'He was surprised to find out that word of his rifle had spread' Just a heads up, I'm going to be installing a newer, more reliable storage solution in my PC tomorrow. I don't expect it to delay the update or cause any issues, but if I vanish, it'll be because something exploded.

Snekguy

2000 word update, new content at ‘The smell of cooking food attracted a few of the villagers’

Snekguy

I was busy with art stuff today, but we're in the green for both the Longhunter cover and the Worlds Apart 2 cover, so that should be it for a little while.

Snekguy

1600 word update, was a bit busy with art stuff today. New content at 'Her pace grew more and more aggressive' I have a piece of artwork ready to upload shortly, as well as covers for Longhunter and Worlds Apart 2 which are on the way. Just a heads up, I have to plan out both of those covers tomorrow so the artists can start their work, so that will likely be quite time-consuming and may delay the update.

Was mostly working on stuff related to the mod and some new artwork today. We have a new piece on the way from Sickjoe which is shaping up really nicely, and the coloring for the Brokers is almost complete. It's pretty late now so I'll get an early start tomorrow rather than trying to get an update out tonight.

2000 word update, new content at “You did the same for me,”

2000 word update, new content at “Are you going to sleep?”

Snekguy

I spent most of today working on my taxes, which took longer than usual due to me taking on a lot of extra work this quarter with the videogame project. I also had to file for a VAT number recently, which allows me to do business with companies located in other countries, but that also means I have to calculate all that stuff too. This is an unfortunate consequence of me being my own accounant while also sucking at math. I expect to work on it some more tomorrow, but I should still be able to get an update out, as most of it is done now.

Snekguy

2000 word update, new content at 'Now you understand how they work, more or less.'

Snekguy

2000 word uodate, new content at “We are but two days away from our destination.”

Snekguy

2000 word update, new content at 'How do I do that?'

Snekguy

They might be Deer people but they’re not Herbivores :P

Robert Gilbert

Makes sense! Just wasn't sure if it was that or not, so I figured I'd point it out.

Alledge

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that I retconned that. It seemed appropriate to make Legs a vegetarian, but the more I thought about it, the more the idea of a stone-age society that doesn't use animal products seemed unrealistic. If they had to kill animals for things like fur, then there's no reason for them not to eat them too.

Snekguy

I'm not sure if I missed something between earlier and now, but I was certain you had established that Legs was a vegetarian and aghast at the idea of eating meat. But in this update she seems to have eaten it and talked about enjoying it.

I'll try to keep up the pace!

Snekguy

2000 word update, new content at 'Everyone had been spooked by the strange artifacts'

Snekguy

I’ve recently given up on a 165 chapter (I use that word loosely as chapter 100 was 56k words, lol) for a pokemon erotic story. While I enjoyed it overall, I gradually grew tired of how it was written. Constant arguing amongst the MC and his three pokemon, repetition, and other annoying things. I have just caught up to where I left off and I’m glad to be reading your stuff again, much better writer, lol :P

Robert Gilbert

Hi Splutty, thanks for the support. I tend not to do a whole lot of planning, I just see where the story takes me, so I don't have an accurate estimate of how long it will take, sorry. I'm aiming for around 50-60k words maybe, so it could be another month or so, but that may extend depending on where I want to take it.

Snekguy

2k words a day on average, work out an average length of a short story, divide by 2k.

Robert Gilbert

Any estimate when this might be finished so I can read it all in one go? :)

Splutty

Unfortunately I did not have time for an update today, as I was dealing with a lot of art stuff. The Broker concept art and the modular Valbaran ships are both in the coloring phase now.

2000 word update, new content at “Damn it, Baker,”

Snekguy

We tried increasing the horizontal width of the text field today, but although the results were pretty good for the text, it broke all of the images on the site. The CSS code is all hard-baked into the WordPress theme, so there's no feasible way for us to adjust every other element without pretty much rewriting all the relevant code. It also broke the mobile version of the text, as it wouldn't span properly. I'm glad you were able to find your own solution, but I'll start providing a raw text file download for stories in progress soon, then you can just grab that and do what you want with it.

Snekguy

2000 word update, new content at 'A successful kill would usually be followed by celebration'

Snekguy

So, the best way to read stories on your website seems to be firefox's built-in reader, which is actually pretty nice. Has text width, color and size options. In case anyone else dislikes the super narrow design.

2300 word update, new content at “We’ll send out three groups of six,”

2000 word update, new content at 'They marched for another day without incident'

Snekguy

It's even narrower than old literotica and that was atrocious. Glad you're looking at it.

Shazammy

Oh, how many interesting and mysterious things are in this story. Thank you for providing this opportunity to read about George and Sam's adventures and look forward to further updates as well.

VitAnyaNaked

2000 word update, new content at 'They returned to their seats with their meal'

Snekguy

Personally I have no issue with the way your website is formatted currently. I’d leave it as is. EDIT: Just started reading the latest update, and I think widening the horizontal might be a good idea, lol.

Robert Gilbert

This is a new setting.

Snekguy

Besides just shrinking the font, I'm not sure there's much I can do about that, since it's a limitation of the WordPress theme itself. You'll just have to trust me when I say that the limited horizontal space makes the reading experience far better than spanning the page. One thing I could do is offer text file downloads so that people can plug those into readers if they want more control over the formatting. I will look into it though, and see if there's anything I can do. Edit: I talked to my guy and he's gonna see if he can increase the horizontal space without busting the theme tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes.

Snekguy

Looks like an alternate North American west where the War of Independence didn’t happen.

Terminal_Boy

Your website really needs an option to show more text at once. It's a bit too mobile focused.

Shazammy

So does this guy hunt longs or

Looking good so far. New Universe or tied to the Warband one?
