An update on sales tax

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give you an update on some changes that we’ll be seeing which may affect some of your pledges. Due to new laws passing in several countries and US states, Patreon will be required to start charging sales tax on some pledges starting July 1st. 

Less than half of all patrons will be charged sales tax, and for most, the amount will be very small. Around 20-55cents.

I’m working closely with Patreon to ensure I’m able to save you as much money as possible when it comes to sales tax. 

I am not in control of tax laws but I do want to weigh in on what I actually do here.

This is not a paysite. I do not sell anything here. While money collected here has always been taxed I have been paying it myself. What is changing on patreon is an added sales tax. What is actually considered a sale however varies from country to country and state to state.

What is happening here is that you are supporting my efforts to create art that my fans can all enjoy and as a show of gratitude I choose to post my art here first including versions of my art, like full resolution images, PSDs, and video recordings. Whether or not this falls under a taxable sale varies per country and state but I will try to do my best to make sure that only the necessary taxes are being collected. My hope is that nothing will change for you. I will see if Patreon gives me a way to absorb the sales tax into my portion of the payment so that the tiers will only ever charge you what is advertised.

If you’re in a location where sales tax will be required, you should expect to receive an email from Patreon with more information about this very soon, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of these changes way ahead of July 1st when they go into effect.
