In the days that followed, Ethan’s life took on a strange new rhythm. Trucks rolled in and out of the barn regularly, large, hulking vehicles that carried off his cows and left behind a new herd of bulls, each one larger than any animal Ethan had ever seen, with thick muscles rippling beneath their dark hides. The new equipment arrived in the dead of night, a line of machines that Stanton had assured him were essential for “production.” It felt strange, but he pushed the feeling aside.

After all, the shakes were something special. Delivered right to his doorstep in sturdy, glass bottles, each one emblazoned with the Raging Bull logo. Ethan drank one as soon as he woke up each morning, enjoying the way the creamy drink filled him with energy that lasted long after the sun had set. He drank another after lunch, and sometimes one or two more as the day wore on. It was just easy; the shakes were more than enough to keep him going while he worked his fields.

And he was changing. He could see it in the way his muscles swelled beneath his shirt, how his arms felt like steel bands when he lifted a shovel or heaved bales of hay. He could feel the changes too, a deep craving building inside of him, something that made him reach for another bottle whenever he was thirsty, something that told him this was what he needed.
