I regularly dye my hair with a red color at the tips (I think people call that a dip dye?). It's not actual chemical hair dye, since it naturally washes off in around a week. It takes around half an hour per week + the time it takes to dry. If you use actual color it would probably take a bit longer but you also wouldn't have to do it as often. I kind of forgot where I was going with this. I guess just do what you want to do and the trouble will be worth it.
