2022-06-15 12:04:11 +0000 UTCI also believe the theme behind the album being named "Donda" is more subtle than a lot expected. To me, Donda is about losing your idols. Losing people we look up to (mothers, fathers, rappers, family and friends) to death and imprisonment. Donda's appearances on the album are all in a lecture form, showing that she is a figure that Ye looked up to, and he believes others should too. In a similar way, he tributes DMX, Pop Smoke, Hoover, Kobe Bryant, and the fabric of his own family. Perhaps its looking too deeply, but I think the thread that weaves Donda as an album is a lot tighter than it is given credit for.

Kim and Kanye having a mock wedding dance to No Child Left Behind earns its spot as the outro track imo. Might just be me but I believe if it were tagged (outro), as well as many others being tagged (Intro) or (Interlude), they would be better received.

Its easy to dismiss certain tracks the first couple listens. I think there is an intention by Kanye to get lost in the songs, in a meditative way, in a curative way. I wonder if that is where the "stale" comments throughout stem from. I wonder if the music gets stale or repetitive, or we are generally impatient listeners. Jesus is King has the same impact, for me at least.

Also, the original version of Life Of The Party is actually a drake diss, which is the reason he leaked it. Kanye changed his verse when he released it on the deluxe version.

Your old man is screaming for some help and direction in understanding the themes of the album and unfortunately he’s left confused. Like Kevin I was also very confused with the album seemingly not being about Donda, but with time and discussions with the community I was able to understand how much of an important role she plays. I had similar feelings about the Pablo review where Kevin understandably struggled with the chaos, but as you know this is also an album with a extremely clear theme (which is summer up with the two words repeated on the album cover). I totally respect and agree with ensuring your old mans first listen is completely unbiased but- as a huge fan of the channel- i think I speak for everyone when I say we would love to see your dad gain deeper understanding of the albums to help formulate his opinion. It also will give you both soooo much more content to discuss. Maybe it’s a quick recap of where things were at with the artist before diving in, and a follow up video a month after first listen to break it down further. “Revisiting Donda?” Anyway, love from Australia mate. 2022-06-11 18:57:01 +0000 UTCI definitely think breaking this album down and catching all the themes of freedom, jail, family, and mentorship does kinda rely on really listening multiple times and analyzing it. I understand the disappointment of the album not being fully about Donda, but I think Connor’s framing of the album as a collection of songs with random features is a little affected by the fact he doesn’t revisit it. There’s a clear narrative thru-line, and the intro and outro serve as proof of that. Quick example: Donda Chant is the opening credits leading to Jail, the intro. Come to Life ends with “So when I’m free, I’m free” which is Kanye finally coming out of Jail, leading into No Child Left Behind, the epilogue/credits as Kanye repeats “He’s done miracles on me” implying that his journey throughout the album and his freedom are only possible due to his faith. You really get a lot more out of the album too if you let yourself feel Kanye’s faith, as it is a major element of the project. That might have also hampered your enjoyment as I noticed both of you tuned out a bit whenever God or religion got brought up. I hope you two read this (Thanks in advance!) and have a nice day! The deluxe version has a completely different feel to it... This version is all over the place because Universal released it before Kanye was ready for it to come out... they literally just threw the songs together and released it without his permission that's why he decided to do the deluxe... So this version of Donda you can say is the labels version however the Deluxe is the way Kanye wanted to release the album... That's why y'all should did that one...
