Visual Novel: Progress Report - 8/20/24

Another week, another attempt at keeping everyone up to date with the VN progress!

Coding: We spent some time over the last week learning more coding in Ren'Py, and we've managed to get all of the created location assets (about 80% of the overall game thus far) coded so they connect with one another. This works to turn the game from just a kinetic novel into a more traditional open-world CYOA novel, and my hope is to get each location to have at least one or two side quests to keep the game rife with content. I'll have to work on triggered cutscenes for that, though, so plenty of work to do there still...

My next coding project, however, will be coding a working day-tracker to create the illusion of time passing. The quests I have in mind would benefit from being tethered to not just different times of day, but also different days of the week. I don't foresee the tracker being difficult to code, but tracking quests and cutscenes may be trickier...

Rough Assets: Fleshing out the story to better suit my needs made me realize I was going to need waaaay more characters in the keep than just Quintessa and a succubus. We created one of the romanceable characters (seen above), but we have at least six more characters to render out before we have a reasonably bustling castle. I think that's going to be what the next update is, so at least I have a few more assets to show off next week.  I also wanna have some filler NPCs just to deliver a couple of one-note lines, for further filling-out, but that's a ribbon feature for much further down the line...

That's probably enough update for now. As I said, my goal for next week is to have the rest of the primary NPC's rendered out, so I can at least get an idea of what everyone will look like. Until then, see ya Friday!
