The First Chechen War began with the dysfunctional Yeltsin government promising a tidy "restoration of constitutional order". What they delivered was a mechanized pilgrimage to slaughter: military convoys being ambushed before even reaching Chechnya, maps that were so old they lacked even the designated rendezvous points, rebels armed with RPGs sold to them by the corrupt oligarchs living in the antechambers of the government that sent the army in. Yet the conscripts bled forward anyway, dragging wounded through flameβgutted stairwells, storming the city of Grozny houseβbyβhouse, holding shattered bridges against waves of enemies...
This episode is not very hopeful. Yet it covers an extremely important period in Russia's modern history that is absolutely crucial to understand its transition from the 90s to the 00s.
