The Office | 1x2 'Diversity Day'

Comments

I was a big fan of Parks and Recreation which was often compared to this being filmed in the same manner. Now I wonder if it really was good or if I'm remembering it through rose coloured glasses

Amy Cope

Oof. That was hard to watch. I never really got into the office when it first aired for that reason. I just can't get into cringe humour and I don't really understand who the intended audience is. I just imagine the Michaels of the world laughing at it and thinking the whole things hilarious rather than doing any sort of self reflection.

Amy Cope

For me it's funny because Michael is the example of the clueless white cis male. Also Steve Carrel delivers his lines really well. But I get that you don't find it funny, it's really hard to digest...

Leticia Schmitt

Oh I know, but Iโ€™ve heard many people say they love this episode because they think itโ€™s so funny and I just donโ€™t understand laughing at it but Iโ€™m not mad or anything, I get it.

Nikki S

I don't think it's about the importance of the issue tho. I think it's about how it's not funny at all and how wrong the things he says are. The joke isn't in what he says, but rather in Michael himself, who has the "capacity" to say these things. I think the biggest example of this is that everyone in the show is always embarrassed too because everyone knows it's very wrong. It's not a show that makes a stereotypical joke and expects us to laugh at the joke... the humor lies in how clueless Michael is.

Leticia Schmitt

Yeaaaaah. Not sure how so many people thought this was a funny enough joke To include it on the show. I get it. I get what people are saying about how it brings attention to something that is still happening and important to realize how wild people sound when they do it in real life, I get it. But I just.. yeahhhh. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿซฃ

Nikki S

Definitely a man child ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

I'm sure a good portion of us have had a boss like Michael. Maybe not as exaggerated as this, but, yeah...I can't tell you how many times I've had conversations like this (again, not as exaggerated as this, but close). I can laugh about it now, but, when I was having those conversations, well, all I can say is awkward! I love this episode since it brings to attention the micro-aggressions that (still) exist in the workplace. And to answer your question, season 1 was released in 2005

Ilsuk Yang

Yup. Michael is a man child... Hang in there, he gets less cringe lol

Spaceydoodle

Itโ€™s like a child running an office and growing up in the process. I find these episodes so fun on rewatch.

"Michael is stressful!" AGREED ๐Ÿคฃ S1 was tough for me to get through cause of the level of cringe and if it had been much more than 6 episodes I might not have been able to make it to S2, but as others have said it gets so much better! Michael is the definition of dingus but he gets less stressful and more just silly and fun, for me anyway! ๐Ÿ˜ Was glad to see him get punched in this one though! Needed that ๐Ÿ’ฏ

scarr

Satire at its finest! I love it and on rewatch this episode always hits me in all the wtf kind of ways. So hard not to laugh out of pure awkwardness which I love

John buchanan

god can you believe nbc aired this ๐Ÿ˜ญ this is still one of the more controversial episodes of the whole show lmao michael is a disaster
