There are around 300 new cards and 35 new video recommendations. The most interesting topics covered by the videos are:
Common mistakes when using arigatou (must watch)
wo moto ni explained
ni mo kakawarazu explained
the ambiguity of tekitou
-temo and -tatte explained
ni vs he (don't use he)
yaru explained (very interesting and much better than Tae Kim's explanation. Not complete though, but this made me adapt the beginner's course a bit. That video is by sambon juku, but the same explanation in more depth with mixed Japanese/English is found also here.)
trains vs cars in Japan
downsides of language exchange
overcoming nervousness
There are also some weird and hilarious new cards...

Thank you for your comment and for recommending the project to others! Years ago I tought about developing an app myself. The required effort for developing and maintaining it in the end made me stay away from this though. Since jlab is a one man show and my current focus is a different one, I can't support in anything at the moment. I'll still try to answer in more detail: Anki's complexity sometimes overwhelms novice users and casual learners, so I think there could be room for something easier. Fine-tuning things however is important for many Japanese learners, so I can't tell how many people in the end would indeed prefer something easier over Anki in the long run. I rarely get requests from people saying they are completely lost in Anki. Those requests are so few that I can offer to solve those problems for people personally using Ankiweb. So most people might be fine with e.g. AnkiMobile/AnkiDroid + default settings. I'd recommend not to underestimate the actual effort required for this. My guess is that it will take much longer than 1-2 weeks to get a sustainable prototype ready. Development, maintenance and support will afterwards take a substantial amount of time.

2025-05-26 15:40:30 +0000 UTCHello! I am an up-and-coming youtuber and software engineer, and I'd like to collaborate on something! For a while I've been recommending the JLab anki deck to everyone I know and it helped me breeze through learning Japanese myself. I suggest using Anki + JLab is a quick and easy alternative to something like Duolingo which doesn't really teach you much, but all Anki apps are unpolished and complicated for users. I can easily make another Anki App, but this time remove the setup and make the interface user friendly like duolingo, so anyone wanting to learn can just download the app and start learning, no need to figure out how to find and import decks etc etc. I can make an app like this in just one or two weeks, but before I invest that time I wanted to see if the users here and the JLab team themselves think this is a real problem that needs solving and would benefit the community. Let me know what you guys think and if people like this idea I'll throw up an app later this month!
