His appearance disrupts the fabric of reality and brings destruction, but Despond at least lives another day.
Despond realizes if a universe can collapse due to time, ultimately he will to. That's what sparks his fascination with producing offspring of his own. The initial wave of three children are the progenitors of dragons...
Note: This is the only clear appearance we'll ever see of Despond in his original, true form. Even then, once colored, it will be VERY obscured. Despond is meant to be a terrible, inconceivable beast and drawing him in full would never do him justice...
