Remember when Wizard first tricked Coven into going into that mountain and retrieving the red magical orb? Deacon was there about a 125 years earlier, managed to take out that one sliver and gain the ability to control the dead essentially. This is important to him as it allowed him to be in two places at once from great distances (among other abilities like making dead body golems, etc.).
