What kinds of airship should we make?

Hey everyone, we're planning on designing more airships over the next few months to go along with the airship port battlemaps we're planning.

So our question is, do you want Eberron-like elemental airships with big rings of fire? Or more traditional fantasy/steampunk airships with wings and sails?

You can vote for both options if you'd like to see a mix!

Or if you have other types in mind, let us know!

(A lot of Spelljammer ships are so kooky that they're something entirely different)

Love your airship stuff of any type however the only thing i would request (and i totally understand if its not possible) but would there be any chance of also releasing a clean version of each map? Basically airships that dont have anything in/on them... like no beds, cannons, cargo. Just clean maps? That way we can size them how we like and scale isnt an issue and we also dont have to be fixed in usage for certain rooms. It's just i found this in my campaign im DM-ing at the mo. I used one of your ships which is great, but as the cannons arent just additional props and are part of the base map.... im kinda stuck with them on the ship and ive told the gang just to pretend they arent there. That way if you ever made an airship props pack, with items that could be put on the ship, everyone could make exactly the ship they wanted. Anyway amazing work as always. :)

Only two things that come to my mind are Ghosts of Salt Marsh for 5e has normal ship rules that could be adapted and the somewhat obscure Final Fantasy d20 which is based off of Pathfinder rules https://www.finalfantasyd20.com/equipment/airships/

Would love to see anything you come up with - your maps are great. Selfishly, I'd love to see if you can take any inspiration from a ship I have in my world. A one-of-a-kind sailing ship built of strange drow magic. The footprint of the ship resembles a streamlined hourglass shape. The sails are made of spun webbing. Each side of the ship resembles four massive spider legs folded over on each other to create the hull. Usually when it appears in my games, the "legs" are merely decorative - an stylistic nod to the ship's origins. However, there are a series of control gems that can magically transform the ship into a number of special attributes. One gem causes the legs to rotate around the hull, deflecting many incoming attacks. One transforms the ship into a submersible vessel, with a layer of webbing forming a waterproof shell between the legs. One reshapes the legs into a battering ram shape, like an X-wing without the central hull. One turns the legs into actual legs, allowing it to walk like a massive spider over the land. One spreads the legs out, forming two pairs of wings with the webbing between the legs, granting it flight. And finally, the legs can stick out in 8 directions as the entire ship suddenly spins and rotates, dealing massive seige damage to nearby vehicles (think the 'death blossom" ability from The Last Starfighter, but with the legs acting like saw blades). If any of that is useful, have at it. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Some high-end Eberron ships are: Chains of Gold: the personal airship of Antus ir'Soldorak which includes its own speaking stone station and an infirmary with cuttingedge Jorasco facilities . . . Golden Dragon: (There's a offical b&w map of this, but it's plain b&w and a little skimpy on detail). This luxury air liner was originally commissioned as a massive Brelish war ship. After the end of the Last War, Lyrandar re-commissioned the vessel as a luxury liner with the finest outfittings. The ship is large enough that it requires two elemental bindings, both fire elementals, in addition to a separate water elemental binding. The combination of the secondary fire elemental and the water elemental are required to provide the extra lift. "A floating airship fills the night sky...The housings for not one but two elemental rings surround the giant vessel - one blazing and crackling with flame, the other dormant and dark. The ship herself is near 200 feet long and over 60 feet across at her thickest. The Sovereign Host alone knows what device or artifice could keep such a behemoth aloft. Soarwood tinged with gold and carved with scale and talon motifs makes up her body. Her front bow is rendered into an enormous dragon's head with fanged mouth gaping wide." Spa: "The serene lilt of a flute soothes the spirit as the scent of jasmine flower incense floats on the air. Woven bamboo mats and cushions line the floor of this elegantly decorated studio. Above a cushioned massage table, arcane designs and tapestries hang from the walls." Casino: "This dimly lit chamber is alive with voices as guests crowd around various tables hurling dice or slapping down gold bars and coins. On one wall, a huge wheel in the shape of a dragon chasing its own tail spins incessantly, its glamered scales casting multi-colored light. Three elf women, each surpassing the next in beauty, sing from the stage, and the bar is tended by a portly halfling with a wide smile. Goblins in green tailed surcoats scamper about, bringing patrons their beverages and exchanging currency." Agate Star: "...an airship built for luxury...Her main deck boasted a grand pavilion containing a luxurious dining room, a lounge and even a small library, though Janik found nothing on it shelves to catch his interest. The deck had room for chairs, and the cabins below were spacious and comfortable." "In place of the sunlight and chatter of luncheon time, the dining room was now dancing with candles and alive with the soft music of a small orchestra" Captain Alistair d'Lyrandar Lieutenant Mazzia d'Lyrandar Other Officers/Crew: Velgram Linntorm - bosun (half-orc); Manten Dramgrim - chief artificer (dwarf); Jaeden Kovane - ship cook (human); Kalibar Jenks - proprietor of House of Chance, casino/lounge (halfling); Zan - proprietor of Serenity Above of the Clouds, spa/mediation/massage facility (elfJ)

I've recently become obsessed with the world of FateForge from Studio Agate, which features airships of a more traditional variety. I want nothing more than for my players to explore the world, so I'm planning on starting them with an old, broken down airship that they can repair and use to sail off on adventures. Though one thing I'm struggling with is finding rules for airships. Anyone have any recommendations??

Brian Meyers

Yup! Would love a Squid Ship or a Man O War or a Hammer Ship too, i think the really fantastical main body designs for airships/space ships are very cool and thematic.

bewby

I'm just happy to have more spelljammer fodder so BOTH! But hopefully this airship series does well for you and makes it worth doing some spelljammers too! lol

bewby

Both ideas are cool but I play Eberron where only Elemental airships are canon (other than the skycoaches which are smaller and only work in manifest zones like in Sharn, so that's too limited). So I'd love more variety of elemental airships if possible! Thank you for caring and asking.

Farouche

Love your stuff and elemental airships are great for my Eberron games but another idea could be. Mimic colony airship!

Would love to see what kinds of Eberron airships you could put together!

GumboSamson

We want spelljammer airships. Things that look like nautiloid squids or sharks. By the way, for Forgotten Realms, please just read the wiki entries about Halruuan skyships. Their hull is made out of dragon turtle bone or something like that - the details would help to draw them if that's the route you go. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Halruaan_skyship

Dave Lindsay

Burlesque house airships. x3

Threyon

air ship carried by giant eagles? lol Rescuers style. or magical stones/crystals

Alaskankare

Organic airships ("ship" could be a stretch, such as gargantuan floating beholders that symbiotically live with a Crew and quarters on or inside, treants with giant leafy wings and a deck grown on their back, flying fish lifting a clamshell chariot into the sky, etc.

MC

Both? Both. Both!

Heather

I would love to see airships based off possible creatures in the environment so they could camoflauge and avoid attack from monsters

Scarlet T

Nautiloids and Mechanical Dragon ships would be awesome too. Your airships are all amazing!

Devyn Rees

Both is fine, but there are already some great examples of steampunk airships out there. Elemental airships are much rarer, so I vote for that. Could you make a ship-to-ship battle? Two different ships flying alongside, trying to take each other out? That would be amazing.

AyuVince

The only ones supported by an official dnd 5e setting: Elemental airships! 🙌

Guillaume Simard

Personally, I'd love to see steam-powered dirigibles and zeppelins!

I’d like to see a mix of both as well. And traditional ones with very minimal “wings” because let’s face it—airships fly due to magic, not aerodynamics, so any “wings” would be for show anyhow.

Catherine Chase

We made empty versions of the last set of ships!

Cze and Peku

Maybe a Mind Flayer variant or one with an aberrational quality

Please more war ship style!

Tyler Heuman

It would be cool to have a basic "empty" version of a ship at some point, which can then be filled as appropriate. Mostly as a base for the players

MiepMaup

MOAR EBERRON!

Zed Bundershot

I'd love an airship fortress. 😏 I have ideas about where my campaign could go. A multi level fortress would be kinda sick 🙏🏿

Jordan Samuels

I LOVE Cedar's idea about an organic ship! That would be so cool!

Spelljammers please!

What about a fully organic ship, e.g. the sort of thing that a group of druids might grow together? Perhaps with giant seed puffs instead of sails? Or I suppose on the less wholesome side of things a necromancer ship made from bones and sinew?

Cedar

Why not both?

Dee Kay

Ideally a mix of both is what I'd like. This last pack you posted was really great, and another one would be perfect. If I may add ina suggestions, - perhaps a airship dedicated to warforged?

Andrewx8 88

Just my 2 cents, but this is not something I can use. (airships i mean)

Can we have airships with different purposes if you’re making a port? Like cargo, or an airliner/passenger one, military ones, significant size differences, “my first airship”:tm:, pleasure cruises, a flying bar, guard ships, racing ships, etc. I really don’t need yet another generic airship that’s clearly built for a party size of 5.

Oliver Warlow

I currently run a 5E Gundams & Dragons campaign, so some techy ships would be a BLESSING.

Javier Nunez

I care less for the style (I'm a Planescape DM and can incorporate everything 😁) than for the story they tell. Anything that's remarkably different, outstanding, having a special theme... thinking of your Casino boat as an example, but having "planar" themes like an ice ship, ooze ship, angelic or demonic ship, stuff like that would be amazing 😁

Heiner de Wendt

I'm one of the people that would prefer Eberron style ships with an elemental ring, but am open to other styles. As long as steampunk looks steampunk and Eberron looks like Eberron, it's all good, I've yet to be disappointed by any release.

Trace

I actually would love to see airships that had both qualities. For example, an elemental airship that has steampunky mods/upgrades, or vice versa!

Voted for elemental but both would be great! I was just looking at the previous airship maps and wishing for the slightly niche option of a passenger ship, with some kind of on-board seating visible on the map.

SPELLJAMMERS! (Please)

I love airships, so I would pick the greedy answer of both! The airship designs so far have been amazing and creative, so would be eager to see both kinds.

Captain Blackwood

I'm more of a fan of steampunk airships, but if elemental wins, I will be very excited to see what y'all come up with

Michael Woods

A massive nautiloid!!! With variants for flying and wrecked.
