It Didn't Have to Be Magic… | Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Ep. 2 Reaction

x) The through line of how one small action (Himmel saving someone/inspiring someone to act in the service of others) has ripple affects beyond the ability of a single person is what keeps me coming back to this series. Episode 2 is so bittersweet in saying goodbye to Heiter, but I love how his trick paid off; he *knows* Frieren so well, and played such a long con to get her to teach Fern and bet on her *liking* Fern to take her on as an apprentice. it's also fascinating to imagine like ... They were maybe similarly mentally aged when they had their 10 year journey, but Heiter has gained a lot of age old wisdom that he's earned from being only human and maturing a lot faster than Frieren can. x) It's a Thing to think about -- wouldn't it be nice if we could All Be So Wise Very Quickly, right I think you're both on the right track for the kind of vibes this show puts down--Adam may be swift on the uptake to notice the fantasy tropes, but I think Sarah is also picking up on the emotional heartbeat here and yes it's a little quieter and a little more contemplative, but it's got SO much heart. Also as always love the editor's touches that make the reaction parts a riot -- though I think by the end of this Sarah may be faster at doing some Himmel History Math and Adam may conquer the names and keep them all straight (maybe xD)

Not sure someone has mentioned this to you already or if either of you know any German but each of their names have meaning: Himmel - sky/heaven Heiter - cheerful Eisen - iron Frieren - cold Fern - far/distant I like Himmel's meaning a lot as he's often held up as an ideal. They make great use of sky imagery in the show - like when Heiter was saving Fern and he was talking about his friend that he missed. The sky takes up a large part of the shot as if to show Himmel's presence via his influence on Heiter. And Heiter later says he decided to save Fern because that's what Himmel would have done. Then later Frieren says the she'll do the same while looking at the hole in the rock - but the sky again is a large part of the shot. It's quite beautiful and poetic. I love it.

Regarding Frieren saying she thinks she's probably doing it for herself. I think she's right. I also think Fern is right. It's when we do things to honour those who have passed - it's for them, but it's actually for ourselves. A rather healthy way to grieve. But they're gone, so it's really for ourselves. I think Frieren was acknowledging that her spending time looking for Blue Moon Weed was also part of her grieving Himmel's death.
