Violet Evergarden Episode 13 Reaction- Auto Memory Doll and "I Love You" (YouTube Version)

Even though the train scene lasted way shorter than I expected it to, this was a great wrap up to a fantastic anime (I know, we still have a couple weeks to go). Who do you think opened the door at the end?

Who is Violet talking to at the end? Symbolism is huge in this series and everything is intentional. The Legend of Violet Evergarden is told from the point of view of different characters affected by Violet. Multiple soliloquies reminiscing how Violet affected these characters are given in EP1 Hodgins, EP2 Erica, EP 3 Lucullia, EP 4 Iris, OVA Aldo, EP 6 Leon, EP 7 Oscar, EP 10 Anne, EP 13 Dietfried. But the show ends with the focus on Violet. Let’s reframe that. The series ends with the point of view focused onto Violet. And what do we call that point of view used? It’s the first person camera point of view - the viewer’s point of view. Violet has greeted us. Now we’ll be the ones offering soliloquies about how Violet Evergarden affected us. Other symbolism in this (and other episodes) is the use of fire to symbolize guilt and trauma. During Gilbert’s and Violet’s last conversation before the final Battle of Intense Gilbert is the only one lit by the flame of the lamp and there are cuts of the roaring bonfire outside while he is speaking. He is overflowing with guilt for her. But Violet is depicted in shadows as she still lacks the understanding necessary for guilt. Contrast that with EP11 where Violet has built a roaring fire to warm Aidan and she is awash in its light - and the guilt for not being able to save him and not being able to save Gilbert. At the end of this episode when Violet reads her letter and we see the single tear drop falling there is a flame inside the teardrop that extinguishes before it lands on the violet flower. This symbolizes the extinguishing of the flames of Violet’s guilt towards Gilbert. She’s forgiven herself, but she doesn’t love herself yet. Now’s a perfect time to review the lyrics to the OP “Sincerely” by TRUE as it’s written to express how Violet feels after writing her letter.

With one off shots of anime, it's never guaranteed that you get to tell the whole story. Following seasons or movies were and are never a guarantee so I think they gave some amount of closure to the story to give it some satisfaction to the viewer. Looking at her growth arc, I think there was a lot to fit into 13 half hours. The way the show was done and broken up you could've easily have had 13 movies to really give each episode room to breathe. Certainly some episodes really needed it, but there was enough there to give the feeling of progression without being too succinct or too drawn out. Always leave the audience wanting more is definitely a mainstay ideal of this show. As for who opened the door at the end? I had read that when VE first released in Japan, there was a sudden glut on hand written letters being written and sent to people, as if the series inspired people to communicate with others. Most of the episodes are pseudo narrated in past tense by the main antagonist, like in the beginning, it was Claudia, then Luculia, then Leon, etc etc. Almost like these people are reminiscing on how Violet changed their lives. On my original watch I thought maybe she's coming to see the viewer, to encourage you to write a letter to someone dear to you. Maybe she'll change your life too.

I am also satisfied with this ending, but hearing you say there are still movies, maybe it's still a continuation (I HOPE!!!!) or just like a one-off request to write a letter, i dont wanna get my hopes up tho! But the music in this entire episode actually made me tear up! Wow, i'm glad I decided to watch this with you guys, i honestly feel so sad you cant share this to the world because of copyright, and so mad too! but thank you for letting us still watch it here on Patreon!!!!

"He wants her to choose him because she chose it and not just because he told her to" this makes total sense, Sarah totally gets it!! however, expecting that from Violet at this point is just impossible... and Gilbert doesnt want to take advantage of her... i feel bad for both of them honestly. This seems like a tragic ending already, i dont wanna go on, but i will lol
