It was later that same evening, I had gotten up to check on something in the lab and make notes. The house was quiet, everyone was sleeping, and I could hear soft snores from upstairs. I also hear the creak of floorboards as Rings tiptoed into the lab. I recognized the sound of her gaite and way she moved. I had learned that so long ago.

“What are you doing up?” I asked.

Rings closed the door behind her. “I woke up when you got up, so I thought I would keep you company.” She sauntered over to me, taking a seat near me as I made notes. I could tell she was still sleepy and she was fighting it off. The way her tail swished back and forth signaled her comfort with me there.

“You don’t need to do that,” I spoke with a soft tone. “You can go back to bed.”

Rings reached out and stroked my arm, smiling tranquially to herself. “I’d rather wait and go back with you.”

My heart fluttered away from this touch. I turned and gave her a quick, soft kiss. “You’re far too sweet.”

Rings sighed dreamily, watching me work over my potions and experiments. “Can you really not think of anything you want for your birthday.”

I smirked. “Just you.”

He whiskers twitched and her tail did this jerky movement. “Oh come on!” She huffed. “Take this seriously.”

“I am. I am very serious.”

I could see her pout from the corner of my eye, but at the same time I could tell she was flattered. “You have me. That’s a ridiculous thing to ask for.”

“I wouldn’t say that,” I chuckled. I finished adding a solution to one of my potions and I could fully focus on her. “There are so many people here who mean the world to me. But the one who is my world is you.”

Her ears flattened to the back of her head and she got the sweetest look on her face. “Back when you first arrived here, I never expected that crotchety, scrawny grump to say such a thing.” She placed her arms around me, angling herself for another kiss.

“I never thought I’d say it either.” My hands rested upon her waist and I gazed lovingly into her eyes. “I owe you this life. My family. Everything. All because you annoyed the hell out of me in the beginning.”

Rings giggled, kissing me  and tightening her grip. “I wanted to see you melt for me. You were a big challenge.”

I chuckled, returning her kiss with as much affection as I could. “You succeeded. Many times over.” My hands slipped down, cupping her rear in my palms.

She let out a soft moan from the touch. “Aren’t you exhausted?”

“I can always find the energy for you.” I kissed her again, hiking up her nightgown and slipping my hand underneath. I grabbed her ass again, squeezing indulgently as our kiss deepened. Her rough tongue pressed against my lips, and a flutter little sigh escaped her lips.

“I need you,” I whispered into her ear.

Rings swallowed and let out a pathetic little sound. “Ebert.”
