For my camera peeps! - Nikon ZR

The Z Cinema... See, it's all about the Z's. You guys know me, Zammit. Can always trust a Z.

The Nikon ZR is a compact, full-frame 6K cinema camera resulting from the company's acquisition of RED Digital Cinema. Released in September 2025, it combines Nikon's Z-series camera technology with RED's professional-grade video features, including the new R3D NE RAW video codec.

PUT SIMPLY!

This camera offers you a cinema look and when I say cinema look, I mean it. I could happily shoot a commercial, documentary, a YouTube video, online film or a feature on this. Just like a normal DSLR camera. Imagine what you could make with this with all the filmmaking knowledge you've learnt on this channel.

The best bit, the price. For a cinema camera where a RED is 5K (body only), the one I use at the office is 30K. This little bad boy is just over or under 2K depending on where you live in the world.

If you're interested in getting a camera that you can grow with and still future proof yourself. I'd look at this. I'm tempted....

Oop, accidentally pressed enter mid comment (didn't know if alt+enter was for line breaks). Was gonna say you reminded me of my first experience with professional cameras in high school. I think it was around 2018, sometime in my senior year. I signed up for a "visual communications" class, which was essentially just an intro to photography and editing. The school somehow could afford to allow a dozen students access to Canons, I think it was the EOS Rebel T7 (of course one student broke theirs). From there I unlocked all my creative drive and actually had fun learning all the techniques and getting into the editing side of things (back when Adobe products were a tad more affordable). On one of the last days of the school year, the seniors had the option to just stay home, and funny enough I was the only one who showed up to the class. Felt pretty good when I saw how proud the teacher was with the project I came in to finish. Even though I didn't stick around with the camerawork, it consider that class a pivotal moment in steering the direction I wanted to take with my future. Oh yeah, the camera looks sick too!

I don't think there is. It's mainly because they're at the bottom of the pile so I believe they're taking a loss per unit sold to get people to switch. I'm a Red guy and if I were to purchase a new camera. Yeah probably a Sony FX line but now.... I want this. Auto focus from Nikon was epic anyways and now they've got raw recording. They own the rights to that now they bought Red out. They also have the Red colour science which is what you want. Yeah, I'm sold on this and I want one.

Oh wow, that's actually a pretty insane answer to the Sony FX3. Kinda forgot about Nikon when they launched their mirrorless line. It always felt subpar compared to Sony and Canon. Seems like they're back, it’s so cheap, what’s the catch?
