VERSO'S ENDING!! | CLAIR OBSCUR: EXPEDITION 33

To add to that, even though Maelle dies in the canvas, at least she truly got to live her life, surrounded by friends. Verso actually got to grow old and finish out his days. Yeah, he failed to save his mother (but that was her choice, not his). Honestly, that’s already more than he deserved, considering how many expeditioners he manipulated and killed (expedition 0). Renoir lost both his daughter and his wife, hopefully he can take some comfort in knowing they were happier where they ended up. Not together, but still, happier. As for the canvas, it’ll keep going without the whole Dessendre family oversight, which was the whole point anyway, a chance for everyone to really live, to be free.

There’s no real ending for me, I just accept that it’s open, there’s no canon ending. Still, I can’t stand Verso’s ending. I picked Maelle’s. The Dessandre family basically just plays with people’s lives and never takes responsibility for any of it. With great power comes great responsibility, right? Haha. But they’re selfish as hell and decide to straight-up violate everyone’s will (the mother, the daughter, and honestly pretty much everyone in the canvas) just to get what they want. Saying the people in the canvas aren’t real is just wrong. They’re just as alive as anyone outside it. They’re not puppets; they have free will. The only difference is that their whole existence depends on the whims of some psychopathic gods—a family who’d squash you like a bug without a second thought. Genocidal maniacs, exploiting Verso’s suffering—suffering they themselves created—to further their own goals. I just can’t stand by them. Aline and Maelle made their own choices. Sure, maybe you want to “save” them and think you’re doing the right thing, but in the process you wipe out billions of lives. Hell no.

Just finished your entire saga of experiencing Clair Obscure, and I've loved seeing you for through the same emotions and congnitive flips and glitches to this truly amazing story. This game is a literal example of a work of art in media. I hope it gets GOTY. Keep up the great vids - you made me buy Death Stranding (you ba5tard) so I'm queuing your DS vids for my next watches. Honestly, I've not watched Amazon Prime or Netflix or similar for the last few days cos I've slapped you videos on. Love your content and genuine reactions to both story and your reactions to plot and cinematography and direction. Btw I've found your short film The Peacemaker on Vimeo - I'm away to Belfast next week so I'll watch (spoiler - watched the first two minutes and I'm like 'ok....!'

I love that both endings are morally grey. Both condemn a character to a life that they don't want. If you choose the Maelle ending Verso is forced to live (even though he is shown to be ageing and will eventually get his ending). And Renoir, Aline and Clea will lose yet another child/sibling as she will eventually die in the painting. But it's her life, so she should to choose. In the Verso ending he forces Maella/Alicia back to the real world, where she is alone and in pain and has nothing. He destroys a whole world full of sentient living beings so that he can die and "save" the real family. Personally I can't get behind the Verso ending as I do believe that within the context of that world the painted beings are "real" and living creatures. You spend dozens of hours with Lune, Sciel, Esquie and Monoco. Even prologue shows you that these are people. I don't think I could choose to essentially genocide them. I'm not sure how anyone could play through the whole game and still think of them as imaginary or fake within the context of that world. She wasn't forcing him to play in her ending btw, the paint on her face shows that she's degrading and dying.

I'm gommaging so hard right now.

Ahhhh, the "correct" ending!

What about the other characters? Verso could still enjoy his time in this lovely now villainess world plus everyone was together. The only bad thing was Alicia's body and mind was slowly being destroyed. Then again, Verso has now saved his sister. Tough one this!

If I was playing this game after watching this playthrough, I would've chosen the Verso ending. He looked so angry and sad in the Maelle ending like he was trapped in a world that he didn't want to be in anymore. I felt so bad for him. You can tell he was ready to go.
