I'm sure unfamiliar hairstyles and hats makes you less likely to be recognised by most people. People with prosopagnosia (face blindness) will often recognise people _only_ by context and other details such as hairstyle. But I also think specifically hats; assuming it's a fairly functional hat for keeping your head warm or hair out of your eyes when outside etc. also correlates a lot with moving rather quickly; so you might also happen to look more busy (with biking or getting to a bus or whatever) when wearing a hat. And at least here in Norway we're very unlikely to try to bother someone who looks to be in a hurry even if we do recognise them. I don't have prosopagnosia; in fact I'm almost a little too good at faces so I often don't even notice extra details about someone such as their hair or headgear if I can see their face. And I do see Norwegian celebrities almost every time I move about in central Oslo for more than an hour; but I politely pretend not to notice them. But if I ever see either of you in public; I'll try to remember to call out your name and exclaim "I'm a wizard!" even if you look busy.

Hearing you talk about Matt or not due to the hat makes me think of The Great Muppet Caper where Kermit and Fozzie are twins. The only way people know them apart is fozzie wears a hat. There is a scene later where a little girl sees Kermit and says “look at the bear!” And her grandfather says “no that is a frog… bears wear hats”
