July: The Adventurer — Musketeers in Combat

This month, our musketeers drop the cloaks and dive into steel. These are not courtly officers or stage-fencers — they’re soldiers of the fringe, gunmen of the first hour, survivors of raids, duels and border wars. Their coats are lighter, their boots worn, their expressions sharpened by powder and pride.

⚔️ Why no capotes?

Because capotes weren’t always there. The dramatic flowing cloak we associate with later musketeers wouldn’t dominate fashion until well into the 17th century. Before that, soldiers fought with layered doublets, tight belts and reinforced sleeves — clothes made for surviving a gunfight, not dancing at Versailles.

These figures belong to that earlier world.
One foot in the age of pike and shot, the other in the alleyway.
Muskets, swords and short lives — but no regrets.

Este mes, nuestros mosqueteros dejan a un lado los gestos teatrales y se lanzan de lleno al combate. No son oficiales de salón ni duelistas de comedia: son soldados de frontera, hombres del primer fuego, supervivientes de incursiones, escaramuzas y emboscadas.

Sus ropas son ligeras, sus botas están gastadas, y sus manos conocen tanto la mecha como el acero.

¿Y el capote?

Porque aún no lo llevaban.
El famoso capote amplio y decorado que solemos asociar con los mosqueteros no se popularizó hasta bien entrado el siglo XVII. Antes de eso, los hombres de armas vestían jubones ajustados, mangas reforzadas, cinturones y chaquetas pensadas para aguantar un disparo, no para impresionar en la corte.

Estas miniaturas pertenecen a ese mundo anterior:
un pie en la era de la pica y el mosquete, y otro en el callejón.
Pólvora, acero y pocas palabras. Pero nunca sin estilo.
