When the shieldwall broke, only the man remained.
Without the shield beside him, the ceorl had to choose: retreat or stand. And many stood, though the line was gone.
In that moment, the battle became something else—closer, dirtier, more desperate. Short strikes, seax to the chest, mud and blood underfoot.

Cuando la formación se rompía, quedaba solo el hombre.
Sin la protección del escudo vecino, el ceorl debía decidir: huir o seguir luchando. Y muchos eligieron resistir, aunque ya no hubiese una línea que defender.
En esa tensión individual, desesperada, nacía otro tipo de combate: más sucio, más directo, más personal. Golpes cortos, seax al pecho, barro y sangre bajo los pies.
