Inspired by the iconic Cholstrey Court Barn in Ludlow, this model brings to life the rural architecture of early medieval England. Long before stone manors and castles dotted the countryside, it was these timber-framed barns that stood at the heart of every village and estate.

In Anglo-Saxon society, barns were far more than storage buildings. They safeguarded harvests through the harsh winter months and ensured the survival of entire communities. Constructed with a robust wooden frame and filled with wattle and daub, these structures were both practical and enduring. Their thick thatched roofs protected grain, tools, and precious livestock feed from the relentless English rain.

Such buildings were also symbols of local wealth and power, often attached to the lands of a thegn or an early noble. Raiders, especially Norse invaders, targeted these barns knowing that within their walls lay the food and resources that sustained a lord’s household and warband.

Whether as a defensive strongpoint during a raid or the target of a desperate winter skirmish, this farmhouse is a perfect centrepiece for any Anglo-Saxon battlefield or settlement. It’s not just a building—it’s a story waiting to be told.
