For centuries, the term fyrd referred to the Anglo-Saxon levy: free men summoned by their lord to defend their lands in times of war. Though not professional soldiers, these farmers and craftsmen were legally bound to train and maintain their own weapons. Armed with spears and round shields, they could form an effective defensive line, capable of withstanding even the charge of veteran warriors.

Durante siglos, el término fyrd designó a la leva anglosajona: hombres libres convocados por su señor para defender sus tierras en tiempos de guerra. Aunque no eran soldados profesionales, estos campesinos y artesanos estaban obligados por ley a entrenar y mantener sus propias armas.
