Selkie Boyfriend: Fionn (special preview)

Every winter, there’s a tradition in your home town where the people will gather around the frigid beach, strip off as much clothes as they are comfortable with, and plunge themselves into the nearly frozen waters. This isn’t anything new or beyond the stretch of the imagination, this happens everywhere, only difference is that, for your town, the Selkies join in.

It all dates back centuries ago when it was a sort of mating ritual, when the men would try and impress the female Selkies at the time. Now, it’s just fun between couples, an excuse to have a festival between thanksgiving and christmas, and a silly game at that. Your step-father was a Selkie, and every winter you watched as your mother plunged into the icy ocean and swam into his coat which kept her warm until he brought her up on land.

Back then it seemed like the most romantic thing one could do. Then again, back then it wasn’t a tourist hot spot, it was an intimate thing the whole town shared. These days it had gotten massive, lasted a whole three days weekend in fact. People took it as something folky and fun, it wasn’t the loving tribute to tradition it used to me. They just wanted fun and laughs, or as a way to meet hot eligible Selkies. You no longer partook of the festivities, instead, you were happy for the three day weekend as a chance to get out of town. You often went away somewhere, usually a bed and breakfast further up that was always totally empty because everyone was staying in town for the Selkie festival.

This year, that didn’t happen. All plans fell through and your beloved bed and breakfast was closed for the winter. You were stuck at home for the first time in years during the festival. You planned to stay locked inside your apartment, stocked with all the snacks and digital distractions your heart could want.

Your little brother, Lukas, was adamant on getting you to attend this year. Half Selkie himself, he took the festival more seriously than it needed to be. And first thing that Friday morning, he was pounding on your door.

“Open up! Mom and Dad are making their special seafood cakes for lunch!” He bangs on the door and rattles the doorknob.

You stare at the door from the coffee pot, scowling and hunched.

“I know you’re in there! I brought Fionn wit me as a threat!”

“Don’t say that,” Fionn grumbles quietly.

Fionn was your brother’s best friend, not only that, he had been a troubled Selkie that your father took in. His home life hadn’t been great, and he was headed down a rather rough path until your dad stepped in. Fionn was a struggle at first, as teens you fought constantly, especially over how he treated your family. As time went on though, Fionn grew up, he became respectable, upstanding, and was a hard worker. He was also the biggest son of a bitch you had ever seen.

You scoff and rub the bridge of your nose. “Please don’t rip off my door.”

“I’m gonna!” Lukas shouts back.

“No,” Fion growls.

You open the door and look up at them. Lukas is like a clone of his father, tall, pretty, and soft, with copious amounts of white and black curls. His dark eyes brighten as he looks down at you.

You sigh heavily. “What do you want?”

Lukas’ expression is instant, judgemental, and slightly cute. “What do I want? What do you want? This is your first festival home in years! You should be enjoying it.”

Fionn is standing back, and being a bit more understanding than Lukas. He towers over even tall Lukas, standing very close to seven feet tall. He was broad and muscled, but still had that shapely softness all Selkies possess. His skin was mottled dark and pale, and his long gray hair was tied back into a thick braid. His facial hair was thick scruff, but even it looked soft to the touch.

“Too many people,” you say to Lukas. “I’m not risking it.”

“But it’s fun!” Lukas scoffs.
