But, anyways, I thought if I made perfect paper roses, then, the ghosts of the roses that die would come and inhabit my paper ones then go on and live forever.” She flourishes her fingers out then chuckles with embarrassment. “Ridiculous, no?”
“No,” I shake my head. “I think it is very sweet! Like you wanted to give them a second chance at a better life.”
“You see it,” she grins and her hands flutter to her chest. “I’m glad.”
“Of course I see it.” I glance to the rose bushes. “I wish I could give them all a second chance at life right now.”
She sighs heavily. “You are perhaps the most perfect creation,” she says quietly.
My vines tighten, coiling up and squeezing so that all of me feels tense. “Huh?”
Atropa looks to me, her eyes so strikingly green. “Prims,” she murmurs. “You’re these perfect creatures on your own. You live forever, grow forever, and yet you tend to some of the most fragile beings on this earth.” She waves her hand out to the garden then lets loose a heavy sigh.
“Prims are so amazing,” Atropa whispers.
“We do not live forever, you know.” I place my hand over hers. “We just live awhile.” I take her hand into mine and her fingers squeeze. “Some of us prefer to live short lives, and then, we return home.”
“But you have a choice.” Atropa has tears in her eyes.
