Patron Acknowledgement Pages (Version 01)

Here's what the Patron Acknowledgement pages will look like, more or less. There will be revisions, once I receive the final form submissions.

Please take a look through! If you see anything that bumps you, please let me know.

I'm really torn on that typeface. The stubborn part of me says that it looks "authentic," with a partially illegible appearance that mimics the type of writing I have seen of this sort from the time period. I really like it that way. The partial illegibility is part of its charm, I think. The downside, of course, is that it's partially illegible. I think this will be much less of an issue in the printed edition, but online, it's not ideal. And though I like the look of the typeface, the rigidness of the grid format really hampers the olde-timey effect.

I've tried a few other script fonts, but they all suck compared to this one. I'll take another look and see if I can't find something better.

EDIT: I gotta make a pass to make the treatment of initials (e.g. E.G.) consistent.

I've got a new version done, I'll post it tomorrow! I think I improved it well.

But the illegibility is authentic! :) IMO it might benefit from the text being slightly larger and the leading narrower; to me that would make it feel more authentic (can't waste paper!) and it might help with the legibility as well.

I'm gonna try this, or something similar. I think I might get some good mileage out of colouring over the text, too? We'll see.

Tony Cliff

Haha. I love this! I wonder if an easy solution to your uniformed and legibility issue is if you just selected all the type on each page and skewed (transformed) it to the left slightly? Might not work, but probably the first thing I would try. And that way it'd keep everything editable.

It looks a ton like historic inventory lists. (We have a lot of them at the museum where I work

So I was thinking that it would be useful if you could add a bit of randomness like you do with brushes to the type and wondered if such a think existed and it looks like it might! If you're using InDesign then maybe you could use this. Their example is a bit extreme but I think it could add a bit more of a a handwritten feel. https://creativepro.com/a-script-that-adds-a-human-touch-to-indesign-type/

Mmm, I was wonder whether the same solution would be good for generally improving legibility, so it’s worth taking a shot.

I like it! Would a ledger-style lightly lined background help minimize concern about the “too perfect hand grid” feel?

The technical answer is "yes," but : 1) Readability would not improve 2) it would probably just end up looking like a mess 3) hand-lettering and calligraphy is not my strong suit

Tony Cliff

Could you hand letter it?
