Proof of Life #125: progress report #13. Short one for the road.

Heya beautiful people! Here comes N_Taii, the weird duck developer, with the usual Monday PoL post meant to let you know about this past week's progress.

I haven't been able to work quite as much as usual, mainly because I encountered some issues with the character generator when making the city guards, and it took quite a bit of time to fix (all's good now, the city now has both men and women guards). Also, I spent the weekend in my family in a neighboring country. Weekends for me are usually just another day's work and don't differ much from the rest of the week, but my Friday/Saturday/Sunday have been quite hectic, so I've only been able to work on Sunday afternoon and night. Sorry for the delay!

Still, I've made some progress with the story, intorducing the MC's adoptive sister and mother while doing my best to develop the story in a way that well depicts the characters' personality without dwelling too much on superfluous details. I also found a way to better make the mother stand out. So far, she didn't have any major flaws in her character that stood out like the other ones, so I replaced it with an early struggle that needs to be overcome, just to give her character more substance.

Also, I've handed out commissions for the first dwarven character. There won't be a huge amount of them in the city, because that would mean commissioning a whole new set of assets which would take too much time and money. Still, since the settings of HC3 is a multiracial city, that'd be nice to have dwarves showing up from time to time. I'm also thinking about adding Surloks (for those who have watched HC1's introduction video, they're a race of lizard people living in the desert to the north of the continent), but they're not a priority for the time being.

All in all, development is coming along nicely. Next week is going to be dedicated to story development, adding the first NPCs and their routine to the city, and add/remove a few things from the main map so that it actually looks like some time has passed between the MC's childhood and the main part of the game.

That's it for this week! As I said, it wasn't much, but I hope you've enjoyed it nonetheless!

Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful week!

You can still watch it, although it's age-restricted (for obvious reasons^^). I'm not sure if I can link it here, but you'll find it by googling "Henteria Chronicles intro dailymotion".

I wouldn't exactly call it relaxing. My introverted-self having to spend 10 hours at a party with 30+ family members I see once every 2 years was a bit overwhelming actually, but I get what you mean. Thanks for the kind comment : )

N_taii

It was pretty much the same. But maybe the sprites looking more "cartoonish" (big head, small bodies) with their uneven proportions made the assets look less out of place.

N_taii

is the hc1 intro video even still available because i think it got removed from daily motion?

Glad to see you continuing with adding more world building. Love that stuff also glad you got to relax don’t sweat doing that time to time nothing wrong with that.

Ah ok, I thought it was different in HC2, but maybe I just remember it differently. All good

Unfortunately, the size of environmental assets not matching the size of the sprites is a recurring issue in most RPG Maker games. Most assets are made with a certain size as a base, so even if I were to look around, I doubt I'd be able to find anything smaller, except maybe for Vx Ace (previous version of RPGMaker), but then the overall artstyle would be too different. So yeah, unless I commission every single asset in the world to fit HC3's sprites (which I can't really do), size difference will always be a problem. But I believe that after some time, you get used to it : )

Thanks for the update! Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the characters in the picture seem a bit tiny in comparison to the interior. Even the mom looks like she would look like a child when placed on one of those chairs. Maybe you could check a few other sizes :)
