Proof of Life #116: Progress Report #4 (+more maps sneak peek)

Hello guys and gals, how are you doing? I'm here with the 116th PoL Monday post to give you yet another progress report on HC3, with some more ideas on how I will present the story, among other things.

HC3's Story: As usual, no actual progress as long as I'm not finished with all the maps. However, I recently had an idea on how I would present the sex scenes. I was playing this Japanese NTR game, and the game basically gave the player an option between 2 PoVs at the start: either as an omniscient player who can see things the MC cannot see (namely, the sex scenes), or only through the MC's eyes, which would mean most of the scenes are hidden, and only shadows, moans, and the aftermath of the scene remain. Since a lot of you have asked for more mystery in how the scenes are presented, I thought this could make for a good idea to use in HC3 as well. Also, the player would be able to switch between PoV's in the menu, and the scenes would still be unlocked in the reminiscence room even if not seen.

However, I want to make the MC's PoV only partial, so even if the player doesn't see the gist of the scenes, they still have access to freeroam events, and important parts of the storyline. Having two different PoV's for every scene might make the game a little more lengthy to develop, and the monthly updates slightly shorter as a result, but I believe it would be a small price to pay for more variations. What do you think?

HC3's Map: I made good progress last week. The main map is 90% done, and the only things that remain are adding animations here and there, and making the "night version", so adding torches, illuminated street lamps, removing shadows, etc...

Shown above, new smaller maps that will be attached to the main map. In the upper left corner, we can see a huge structure behind the character. This will play a very important part in the story. On the right, the entrance to the estate of the main antagonist (a high ranking noble). The map is still in progress, as I just started it this morning. Below, a greenhouse with many exotic plants. The pond still needs a complete overhaul, but the rest is pretty much definitive.

HC3's Art: Pixel art comissions have been a little slower. One of the artist has been working for free for over half a year, always brushing it off when I asked to pay him, saying he'll send the bill later with everything. Now, I've had to put my foot down and say I won't give him any more commissions as long as he doesn't let me pay him. I've been waiting for over a week now. I know, this situation is as puzzling to me as it probably is to you. I just wanted to share to explain the lack of new pixel art, and because I thought it was funny.

I have sent the first part of the banner prototype to the artist. It is quite classic: 2 main female characters in the foreground, 2 side characters in the background, and the villain above everyone. It is quite similar to HC2, but why change something that works?^^ Also no nudity, since I want to put it up as my Patreon banner too.

HC3's Gameplay: Not much to say about the gameplay, as I didn't do much work on it last week. I've told you everything there was to know about Triple Trident already. I guess the two PoV's option I talked about above could be considered gameplay too.

That's about it for this week!

Thank you for listening, and have a wonderful week!

You could increase the camera's zoom so less is visible to reduce what the player can see.

Yes, they will be hidden from the MC, same as HC2, just not from the player : )

N_taii

Yes, that's probably a bit tricky with RPGMs. But it probably still works as long as the freeroam scenes are hidden behind something, so that the MC cannot see them, which I assume will be the case for all scenes in the first few updates. It will probably take some time before the MC finds out about everything

The issue is that RPGMaker's camera is, by default, not set on the MC's PoV. This means you, as the player, can spot things on the map the MC wouldn't be able to see. It's the case for freeroam events, as you have seen for HC2. I'd have two options to prevent the player from seeing them: reducing the MC's PoV, for example by making everything around him completely dark, but that would be a hassle to navigate through the maps. I could also completely remove the freeroam events for the MC's PoV, but then that would be a completely different storyline. Imagine two characters having intercourse in a dark alley, and when you turn on MC PoV, they disappear. This wouldn't make sense. That's why I wanted to add partial MC PoV: to give players the option to keep the NTR shrouded in mystery, but without being too complicated to implement or being detrimental to the game's design.

I wouldn't exactly say "passionate", but since people wanted more mystery, like moans behind closed doors, shadows, or simply seeing the aftermath of a scene (clothes strewn around on the ground, etc...), I thought this would be the perfect way to satisfy them. I know I would enjoy having such an option. But if people don't really care about it, they can decide they want to be an omniscient player and leave out the MC's PoV option, and it will be just like HC2.

Thanks! I'm glad I can keep in touch with the community this way, without flooding them with messages and updates.

N_taii

I don't think I've ever played that game. Is it also an eroge?

N_taii

Thank you for your opinion. I'll probably make a poll about it someday in the future : )

As someone who enjoys games where the MC cannot see the scenes in full detail, I think it's important that the freeroam events are not easily watchable in that route. It kinda defeats the purpose imo. I think something like that should only be watchable once the MC realizes what's going on. If you can just see the freeroam scenes that would feel like a second omniscient route just with less scenes

Not that keen on multiple pov's, but if you're passionate about it I think give it a try.

Hokagine

I just wanna say you're doing magic with these weekly updates. I appreciate the conversation even if there's more to say some weeks than others!

Ah! The old "Curse of Destiny" gameplay! I loved that option!

John Smith

I am in favor of multiple pov's even if it takes a bit longer.
