Proof of Life #115: Progress Report #3

Heya guys and gals, N_taii's here with a new PoL Monday post, the third episode of the progress report series!

HC3's Story: Still not a whole lot to say. Not all of the sprites are ready, and the map still needs quite a bit of work, so I won't start with the story quite yet. But I keep thinking about it as I progress with other stuff, so technically, I'm constantly working on it in my mind : )

HC3's Map: Still in the works. I've added a few screenshots above. Hopefully, you can understand why this thing is taking hundreds of hours of work.

I'm trying my best to make it as appealing as the RPG Maker engine allows me to, because it is going to be the main stage for a most of the story. There's a few things you aren't seeing here too, such as animated assets in the water, water sounds as the MC approaches the fountains, buildings being transparent once you walk behind them, making sure you could walk on some parts of the city walls, etc... (as well as all the trials and errors, like spending hours on a certain part of the map just to scrap it altogether because it doesn't look good).

PS: All the characters are placeholders for now. I've used the sister model simply  to test height, collision, and other things.

HC3's Art: I'm receiving new batches of pixel sprites as I go, as well as new map assets. All the sex animations of HC2 have been modified with the new character models. They still need a few tweaks, like varying breasts sizes and bodytypes (especially for the smaller red-head character). I've also decided on a concept for the banner. I'm currently gathering references to make sure the instructions for the artist are as clear as possible.

HC3's Gameplay: A bit more on the Triple Trident card game. the original FF8 and FF14 would limit the rarity and strength of the cards the player could use in one match in order to always keep them balanced and not have players throw all their strongest cards to simply steamroll their opponent. However, the card game plugin used in HC3 has no such function, so I had to restrict the order of the matches as well as the reward cards received after each victory to avoid the player getting too strong and only facing weak and boring opponents.

It means that after each match won, the player will receive a pre-determined card of a certain strength from its opponent's deck, and will then be able to move on to the next, a bit stronger opponent. That way, I know exactly the strength of the cards in the player's deck, and can make it so the fight is always fair and balanced. I know, it's not as fun as finding several random opponents on the map at all times, but I had to make-do with...hum...the cards I've been dealt with.

That's it for this PoL!

As always, thank you for reading, and have a wonderful week!

I'll have to look into this whole editor thing more in-depth, but if it is really as expensive as you say, I might have to reconsider^^ Thanks for your feedback and advice by the way : )

570k words! Damn you're productive! That makes it trickier again - I just had a quick read of a few articles myself which suggest a bargain-basement editing price of 1 cent per word just for proofreading (and double that for copyediting where they try to improve text flow and your voice). That'd work out to $5700 to have HC2 professionally edited - I can definitely see how that might be out of budget :P A lot of the webserials I follow will have the author post a typo thread, with reasonable success - even without an incentive that could be worth trying? Wouldn't cost anything, at least. I hadn't thought about the Revenge ending to be honest, which I'm glad exists but to be honest didn't play. I can definitely see that a sexually inadequate MC would make that less satisfying - maybe you could portray his sexual ability being improved by his anger (in the Revenge ending) or sheer time + love (in the Happy ending) - which could explain why he's inadequate in the main body of the story but improves his ability in the endings. But again, if it doesn't fit with the story / ending you want to tell then I quite agree you shouldn't force it.

I just did, actually. Sorry, Patreon doesn't always notify me of new replies. For the side characters, I agree with you. HC3 should work better in this aspect, since both side characters have a direct link with the MC, be it surrogate mother or childhood friend. As such, it should be a bit easier to make them feel closer to the MC, and thus make the NTR feel more satisfying. I'll keep your remarks in mind when writing their storyline and related quests : ) For the sexually inadequate MC, while it could somehow affect the way players perceive the Happy Ending, I think it would almost always negatively impact the Revenge Ending. The MC’s victory would never feel as satisfying knowing the MC would never be as good as the antagonists. Besides, what would be the point of including sex scenes in the Happy and Revenge Endings, knowing it would just be mediocre sex in the end? It would only reinforce the idea of NTR and the MC being a loser in endings that should have seen the tables turned on the antagonists. That’s why I probably won’t do it, although I am aware it would make the NTR part better. Btw, I’ll still have a Happy Ending for HC3 : ) Finally, you got me thinking about editing. I’ve realized that there exist plugins that enable extraction of all in-game text onto a text document, which would make it easier for editors. The major problem with that was: how do I know what text has been added between each update so the editor knows what to look through and what doesn’t need editing anymore? So I asked around and found a solution to that too. Now, I’m just not sure how much would an editor cost, even if it’s just for typo hunting. HC2 had 570k words, which amounts to about 35k words per update. I’ll have to take that into consideration as well, although I’m definitely considering hiring an editor if it somehow fits into the budget : )

+1 to the sexually inadequate idea. Also it would be nice to see that the MC is interested in sex (maybe he masturbates to something, like female underwear or whatnot). Either case, it's your story and I'm just here for the ride :)

Wasted Potential

Hey N_Taii, sorry if you've already seen this - wasn't sure if it got lost deep in the reply chain or not on the last post. Thanks for responding. Just wanted to do another quick response in return. Re: starting the game in childhood. Like I said, I think it worked really well in HC2 – so if you’re confident in this approach I think go for it. Just wanted to present options more than anything else. Re: twofold role for side characters. I hadn’t really considered that you wanted to examine the side characters using a different lens than the main characters (by fetish instead of by relationship). Looking back, I think you did a good job exploring the different fetishes with the side characters. I guess my feedback would be that these don’t need to be mutually exclusive – it should be possible to explore the fetishes while also setting up NTR with the main character (which I would have found much hotter/more engaging). Re: sexually inadequate MC Like I said, this is really just something I personally enjoy rather than something I think would objectively improve the game. If it fits in the context of the story and you have an opportunity to include it – great! If not, I think that’s fine too – and I think your reason for not including it in HC2 makes sense. I should say that I really really enjoyed the Happy ending. It’s the first ending I played, and it’s my personal ‘canon’ ending for the game. I liked that it had a lot of thought and content put into it to make it a ‘good’ ending for the MC and the village as a whole (finding Thania’s husband was amazing). I really hope HC3 includes a happy ending as well. With that said, I don’t think my enjoyment of the happy ending would have been diminished by having a sexually inadequate MC – I liked it more because it was a ‘good’ and happy ending for all the characters I was invested in (and because the MC regained his relationship with the female characters), not because the MC was now a sex god :P. I would have been just as happy with Celis ‘putting up’ with mediocre sex because of how much she loved the MC. Re: editing I must admit it didn’t even cross my mind that you might write directly into RPGMaker – I just assumed you’d do the script in a word document and copy paste it into the game. That does make things more difficult – you could ask a professional editor to read a word document, but it’d be a harder sell to have them actually play through a niche fetish porn game :P. I still think it’s worth the effort – when a game has the kind of errors a simple editing pass would fix it makes it feel low quality or cheap (which your games absolutely are not – I mean you’re hiring someone to make custom art assets!) If you’re up for it something simple you could do would be to have a standing ‘typo bounty’ – for every ~10-20 typos or grammatical errors a patreon finds (the first person to report it to you only), you could offer them a link to that month’s $20 build of the game. Then in every release thread just make a comment saying ‘Please reply to this comment with typos’. Hope that helps 😊
