I'm always of the mindset that the reason he lived was because he "broke" the rule of death when he felt trinity's kiss. She was a reminder that none of that which happened in the Matrix was real, the kiss was, and then he became the one. I'm sure there's an actual explanation somewhere though lol. Also I love Matrix Reloaded, I think its worth at least tackling that one, the later ones are meh, but worth checking out eventually.
