Also it's impossible not to like character of Jeremiah from the beginning when he has amazing voice of Itachi voice actor. About Lelouch in this episode this probably his first of many test of Lelouch mental capability to achieve his goals. Also i feel bad for Shirley alot. The girl actually you see in the beginning of the episode and in Lelouch flashback is Suzaku cousin sister. And heir of Kyoto houses company business. Lelouch and Nunnally was accepted by prime minister of Japan as political hostages . They live probably a year or less with Suzaku, Suzaku father (former prime minister of Japan) and this girl and head of Kyoto houses group during their exile before war with Britainia. But after Britainia attack Japan(8 years ago) Lelouch and Nunnally run away from that place scaring for their lives. They found place to hide in Ashford academy.
