The old man as old as he is definitely knows they exist and might have met someone who has or had one. At the near start of the series captain Morgan said that in the four blues devil fruits were seen as myths or legends. But in the grand line it’s common knowledge that they exist and many people in the grand line, regular citizens, marines, or pirates have them. But that might be because the grand line is the only place you can find them more often than not or in the other 4 blues they probably very rarely are found there. But don’t get it wrong, devil fruits are still rare, but with the hundreds of million of people in the one piece world, many people on the grand line have them.

But again I know you don’t care about it being filler as long as it’s fun an enjoyable. And this stretch of filler before we get to the actual sky island saga is pretty fun. The official saga starts at episode 144.
