Forgive me a bit of a monologue, but this image brought up a particularly happy memory of one of the strangest restaurants I've ever been to in my life. Summer 2010, I was on a road trip visiting the great railroad enthusiast sites of Pennsylvania, and that odyssey happened to include Scranton for the Steamtown National Historic Site (brilliant museum, highly recommended. Staying at a hotel in nearby Pittston, we were looking for somewhere to get dinner. In the hotel lobby were brochures for somewhere called Bobby O's, a nice looking 50's-style diner in neighboring Dupont. What greeted us when we arrived was almost beyond description. The 50's decor was indeed accurate; starry black tile, red vinyl upholstered booths with chrome trim. And every inch of shelving and wall space filled with knick-knacks and tchotchkes of every variety. As we walked in, one of the waitresses, who must have been in her 80's, was belting out the chorus to Hotel California using a plastic queue poll as a microphone while the other diners sang along. And the food, my god! It just... it doesn't compute! After scanning their vast menu, which featured seemingly every dish under the sun from Mexican to Italian, fried haddock and calves liver to pizzas and hoagies, I ordered my usual: a double cheeseburger, mustard only, and fries. One of my travel companions got a small roast beef sandwich, and the other got the spaghetti with meat sauce. All of which, I should stress, was not expensive; it was about what we would expect to pay at your average fast food joint. What none of us were ready for was the portion sizes! When I got the double cheeseburger, I was not expecting two 1lb patties, and that's after cooking weight! The "small" sandwich would put most places' extra-large to shame. And the spaghetti was piled a good 3-4 inches high on the plate. We watched them bring out a large club sandwich out to a family of 4 and it was easily enough to feed all of them with plenty to spare. And the best part: Everything was delicious! It is not easy to cook such large beef patties well, but my burger was perfection on a plate. The roast beef was just like Mom used to make (and I'm happy to say still does), and my friend regretted that because our hotel room didn't have a minifridge he couldn't take his leftover spaghetti with him. Naturally, we didn't have a hope of finishing it all, but we gave it a darn good try. This was a place that would make Gordon Ramsay's head explode; nothing about it added up. And yet, it was wonderful! I've sadly never had a chance to return, but I've looked it up on Google Maps and it's still there! So if ever you find yourselves in northeastern Pennsylvania, please consider visiting the weirdest, most wonderful time warp of a diner and get a taste of Nibbly's meal for real.
