Well that's an interesting divergence from normal mammalian physiology. By and large hybrids females still go through estrus, and it's the genetic factors that occur during meiosis that prevent any viable offspring from occurring...at least in the overwhelming majority of cases. Note: Historical records do contain examples of female mules giving birth after mating with male horses and donkeys, but we're only talking ~60-70 cases in about 2,500 years (reported instances). For those interested, the cytogenetics are really fascinating, with the caveat that years in the lab have completely warped what I find engrossing/fun/fascinating, there are some good review and research articles relating to this.
