Eric was born into a family that obviously are horrible racist, then given his father's slave trading business, and probably told that he needed to not screw it up for the good of the family. It's not hard to see why he ended up the way he did, but it is good to see what character growth that we have out of him. I don't think anything bad would have happened from him specificly if she got caught, but I can see having to do SOMETHING really messing with him.
